ALABJA, Iraq, March 16, 2006 (AFP) - 09h13 - A 14-year-old boy was killed and six demonstrators injured when security forces Thursday fired into a crowd of several thousand Kurds rioting in Halabja on the anniversary of Saddam Hussein's gas attack on the Kurdish Iraqi town, an AFP reporter said.

This and the stupid support of the ministre of religion to islamists in Silêmanî makes me think that perhaps the end of PUK governement in Silêmanî could be a nice thing... The team is timeworn. I know that KDP are not angels, but I never heard that they shot people during a demonstration and it seemed that it is not the first time.

Halabja memorial destroyed

The Memorials and the Halabja Museum have been totally destroyed by rioters from Slemani universty, all of the photographs and witness testimonies have been burned and the charity boxes "liberated".

A local journalist working for Reuters said he saw police and Kurdish Peshmerga militiamen fire warning shots to disperse the protesters as they stormed the one-storey, circular museum that serves as a potent reminder of the 1988 attack.

When Saed tried to placate the crowd, people grew angrier and stormed into the museum, setting fires that destroyed displays reconstructing the gas attack, photographs of the victims and glass cases containing the clothes of some of the dead.

Three local journalists working for Reuters saw the building gutted by fire.

it is very sad that kurds are rioting against kurds...these PUK peshmergas are Shading Peshmerga's name ... I wish they could change their name from Peshmerga to another thing... peshmerga is a holly name to fight with enemies not a "tool to opress riots" and they must learn some new ways of controlling riots.... today we see in Paris there are riots... but noboby was killed because they know how to control a crowd.

and about the protestors i wonder if they are really student... how a student can destroy a national archive.... thats a very big crime and they are stupid that they attack Halabcha Victims... if that moemorial was made by PUK that deosnt mean it doenst belong to kurds...

what the hell "shahid" means here?

PUK is using names as a tool, soon these names will loose their meaning... I worry 10 years later, ppl will hate peshmerga name, shahid name... they shouldnt use these names as a tool to suppress ppl.

I remember in Iran, Basij was a holly name...infact basijs saved iran from saddam's invading...but after the war, they still used Basij as a tool to suppress iranian boy and girls... (for things like hejab , listening music...) now after years...basij has a bad meaning in ppl's mind , and it doenst seem holly at all.
I can see the same fate for peshmerga word.
