KCK says new phase in Kurdish struggle is beginning

A new phase of the struggle for Kurdish rights in Turkey is about to begin, according to a senior figure of the Group of Communities in Kurdistan (KCK).

Speaking to Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) affiliated media, Vice-chairman of the KCK executive council Cemil Bayik said armed Kurdish groups would strive together to reach a common goal.

“The PKK guerillas should play their role more actively,” Bayik said. “They should strive with the nation against the Turkish government.”

Bayik accused the Turkish government of choosing war over dialogue as military operations against the PKK have raged on for months, displacing thousands and killing hundreds of civilians.

“The Kurdish nation wants democratic self-governance,” Bayik further said.

The Democratic Society Congress (DTK), an umbrella group of Kurdish non-governmental organizations, issued a declaration in December 2015 that said the long-standing conflict inside Turkey can only be resolved by granting autonomy to the mainly-Kurdish Southeast.

DTK Co-chair Hatip Dicle said Kurds have the right to self-governance and that the DTK supports the demands of Kurds living in Turkey.
