Barzani-Davutoğlu talks, or the art of rhetoric

Kurdish leader Massoud Barzani fell short of giving Turkey the assurances it required

As usual in diplomatic talks conducted behind closed doors, reports of what the two sides involved in such talks have said to each other are conflicting. This weekend Barzani-Davutoğlu talks are no different. Indeed the Turkish foreign minister emerged from the talks praising the growing cooperation between Turkish and Iraqi Kurds. Davutoğlu said that Turks and Kurds are “eternal brothers”. And the rhetoric was pouring."The brotherhood", went on the foreign minister - is in danger because of the presence of the PKK (Kurdistan Workers' Party) within the borders of northern Iraq. And here the rhetoric started to become reality. The reality is that Kurdish leader Massoud Barzani fell short of giving Turkey the assurances it required. Indeed Davutoğlu had to say that Turkey now expects the Kurdish administration to take a clear stance against terrorism and actively cooperate with Turkey in its counterterrorism efforts. Turkey expects. That's it. Turkey can expect the Kurdish Regional Government to do what Turkey likes, but it is nowhere certain that the Kurds of Iraq will actually do that.

In the joint news conference at the end of the meeting old leader Barzani simply said that "“Our security is interlinked. We will take every measure to further strengthen our security”. Words which amount to nothing more than a ready-made sentence. Rhetoric again. But in Barzani's case not just rhetoric. It is also the reiteration of a stance which might be not at all clear, but indicates that indeed the Kurdish Regional Government will have serious problems in selling away to its people the "iron pact" Turkey wants on crashing the PKK.

So the talks end once again as they have ended in the past. A lot of "solidarity" promises and "security-is-our-countries-priority" talks but that's pretty much it. Words. Till the next visit.

Deputy Osman: Kurds will not play Turkey's game
04 November 2011

“Turkey wants Kurds to kill each other, however Kurds will not be deceived by this game”, says the Iraqi deputy

In a statement to PNA, Iraqi Kurdish Parliamentarian Mahmud Osman remarked that Turkey didn’t have a policy on the solution of the Kurdish problem and said that “Turkey wants Kurds to kill each other, however Kurds will not be deceived by this game.”

Underlining that the problems at the border could be resolved if Turkey and Iran accepted and implemented the proposals of Kurdistan Region, Osman said the followings concerning Federal Kurdistan Region’s opinion about the matter; “First of all, this is a political problem that has got no concern with terror. This is a domestic issue of Iran and Turkey that both countries need to recognize the problem. Because it is wrong that 25 millions of Kurds aren’t granted their right and it needs to be known that the PKK is a consequence of the problem, not the problem itself.”

Noting that Iraqi Kurdish leader Massoud Barzani also supports a solution through dialogue for seeing that not a single solution has been obtained in the war which continues for 25 years now, Osman added; “In the face of Turkey’s efforts to drag Kurds into a war among each other, all sides and Kurdish Regional President Barzani rewords that they will not let that happen again.”

“If Turkey refuses the proposals of Kurdistan Region and insists on its own policy, I am of the opinion that the problem will continue in this way and the visit of Regional President will not produce any result.” added Mahmud Osman.

Underlining the allegations regarding Kurdistan Region’s support to Turkey in the matter of PKK, Osman noted that there wasn’t any kind of military support or cooperation with Turkey despite the political and diplomatic mutualization between two countries.

In contradiction to the allegations that PKK prevents Turkey’s steps for a solution, Osman said; “I haven’t observed any plan made by Turkey to solve the Kurdish issue. They are saying that but there are no steps taken in practical terms. They should make amendments in the constitution to display their sincerity.”

yes me too , but we have to work on each part of kurdistan differently as each is occupied by a different nation and has an artificial border forced on it so we have to be very careful and work with each individual one differently .

if 2 parts gets autonomy or 1 independent and 1 autonomy then we can work on gaining the others back through a UN referendum.
