Ahmet Kaya, Kurdish: Ehmed Kaya (Malatya (Turkey), October 28, 1956 - Paris (France), November 16, 2000) was a Kurdish poet and singer, who was especially popular in Turkey. His father was a Kurdish man and his mother an ethnic Turkish woman. Some of his popular songs include "Protect yourself, my heart blood, a rare man, Koçero and Ağladıkça.
Carrière:
Kaya while working as a taxi driver in Istanbul in mid 80s, before he became a famous singer. During his career he recorded 20 albums. Most songs are in Turkish. He did not sing in Kurdish, because it was at that time banned in Turkey. It would then also face many problems for the singer.
Exile and death:
Kaya fled to France in June 1999 because of the pressure he received from the government for his political thoughts. Kaya was also accused that he was acting for a flag of the PKK on a concert in 1993 in Germany. Furthermore, he positive statements about the Kurdish leader Abdullah Öcalan and the Turks and Turkey have denounced as dishonorable people and country. In March 2000 he was sentenced to three years and nine months in prison for spreading propaganda seperatistische. Kaya died of a heart attack in Paris in 2000 at age 44, and was buried at the Père-Lachaise cemetery.
