Turkish university fires American teacher over caricature

PostAuthor: Vladimir » Sun Mar 05, 2006 10:01 pm

A Turkish university sacked an English teaching instructor on accusation of denigrating Prophet Mohammed and praising Christianity.

Aksam daily reported on Sunday that Bogazici University administration fired American instructor Van Stone, who was serving at foreign languages school, on accusation of degrading Prophet Mohammed and hailing Christianity during carricature row.

Stone, who has been living in Turkey since 2001, was accused also by the students of insulting Mustafa Kemal, the founder of the modern Turkey and of labeling Turkey as "third world country."

Aksam daily reported that Stone had also threatened another instructor who began to work in place of his place.

Instructor Stone was also removed from the university accommodation.

The suppression of ethnic cultures and minority religious groups in attempting to forge a modern nation were not unique to Turkey but occurred in very similar ways in its European neighbours - Bruinessen.

it is human need, when you are in diet you become obsessed. If you have all you want freely you don't think of it all the time. For that reason ultra-religion regimes lead to increase pornography, drugs and alcohol !

They might not be Islamist but they are surely Turkish Nationalists which can suddenly transform into fascism at a moments notice. The same is true for METU (MIddle Eastern Technical University) it is renown for its left wing activism. However, with the rise of Kurdish liberation struggle, the left wing in Turkey have opted for more nationalistic anti-Kurdish line. This is evident in the "Turk SOLU' magazine that called for all Turks to not trade with Kurds and not marry kurds yada yada yada...

It is because when they advocate western values, they do not really internalize it and make it part of their very own identity, so fascism is always simmering beneath the surface.

Turk Solu is a marginal magazine so it is not important what they say. Besides, Kurdish natioanlists piseed mainstream leftists su much that, now even the most liberal voices think twice before using kurd in a positive sense.

If he "slandered" Atatürk and said that Turkey is a Thirld-World country, he should have troubled Turkish students more than all things against Muhammad. Only Leftist Turks could accept so such things

This has not much to do with the topic, but in addition what Rubar said, i would like to add something:

There are some turkish fora in Holland where one of them is known as the least negative place concerning their view upon kurds. There is a topic right now called "which people do the turks hate most?"

Welke volk hebben de Turken het meeste Hekel aan?

Grieken 5% [ 4 ]

Armenen 21% [ 15 ]

Koerden 30% [ 21 ]

Arabiëren 17% [ 12 ]

Europeanen (alg) 4% [ 3 ]

andere, geen mening 20% [ 14 ]

Totaal aantal stemmen : 69
