Rudaw TV’s use of a Kurdistan map in its daily weather forecast has caused uproar in Turkey and among Iran’s Azeri community, calling it a threat to their land.



“Many others have used this map in the past and created places as they wished,” said Turkish Defense Minister Ismet Yilmaz to the Turkish media. “But they will get nowhere with that.”

In the past four months, Rudaw TV has used the map of what many Kurds call Greater Kurdistan. It encompasses the Kurdish regions of Iraq, Iran, Turkey and Syria that stretch to the Mediterranean coast.

Turkey’s Hurryiet and Milliyet newspapers have described Rudaw TV’s map of Kurdistan as a “scandal”.

“We will not take that issue seriously and no one believes in that map,” said the Turkish defense minister.

However, Rudaw director general, Ako Mohammed said that the map used by Rudaw TV forecast section has been in use for years.

“That map has been drawn by experts on Kurdish history and geography and it has been published for many years,” said Mohammed. “We are now using it to tell the weather in the major Kurdish cities.”

Mohammed defended the use of the particular map, saying, “That map is in the mind and heart of every Kurd,”

“But it doesn’t reflect any formal or government position,” he added. “Rudaw doesn’t mean to hurt any other nation. Rudaw works professionally and professionalism crosses all borders.”

Meanwhile Araz News, the website of Azerbaijan National Resistance Front of Iran has called the Rudaw forecast map “A threat to the people of West Azerbaijan.”

“Under the pretext of weather forecast this TV [Rudaw] shows a map that identifies Urumiyeh and all other cities in West Azerbaijan as Kurdish cities,” said the website in an article.

West Azerbaijan is a province in western Iran with a considerable Azeri-speaking population. However, Kurds claim to be the majority in the province, with Urumiyeh [Wirme] as their largest city.

This type of brazen mind set of people criticizing the usage of the map - weather condition for all the people in the region; it is grim at its best, and it is regrettable at its worst with such myopic views. They are intolerant of intolerance, they are in the state of denial of the Kurdish history, they want us to deny our heritage, and deny our history, they have no sense of camaraderie for this region, claim our land for them.

Thumbs up to Rudaw for using the map, which makes sense if they are covering weather forcecast of the Kurdish areas.

Actually - speaking personally - this map is almost identical to the map of Kurdistan I have hanging on my wall - a map that includes all the place names in their original KURDISH - a map that was produced by experts who spent many years examining ancient maps and texts - the only difference being that my map does not go down as far as the Persian Gulf - other than that this map is excellent - though needs to expand into Anatolia more

I very much doubt that you have studied to the extent those who have produced both this map - and the one I have - mine was given to me over 10 years ago - ongoing research explains the more recent beliefs that Kurds had access to the Persian Gulf

I imagine that you are just one of the many unfortunately misinformed young Turks - sad but you probably need to study a great deal more - you will discover that Kurdish territory extended further west into Anatolia than is depicted on this maps - Turks pushed the Kurds out of central Turkey - they went on a forced march during which time many hundreds of thousands died

This map is nothing but purely an expansionist vision of blind Kurdish nationalism. Both the territorial claims on Basra region and the Azeri lands in Iran, and central Anatolia are laughable and absurd claims. There are hardly any Kurds living in those lands. Take Anatolia for example; since when Hatay, Adana, Mersin, Antep, Sivas, Kayseri, Erzurum or Erzincan have become Kurdish? Not even historically these cities have ever been Kurdish or populated by Kurdish-majority population at any time in history. These are like Turkish strongholds in Anatolia, mostly populated by conservative ring-wing Turks.

I know it's impossible for me to convince you on certain matters (as it's with every nationalist), but I've studied history extensively, and I can tell you the Kurdish presence in Anatolia was the result of Ottoman settlement policy. After the Battle Chaldiran in 1514, the Ottoman Sultan Selim I forced many Shah-sympathizing Shia Turkomans out of eastern Anatolia into Iran and many Kurds living in Iraq and Iran (who were Sunni) were re-settled into those regions. It was kind of a population exchange. This was an ideological war, the Kurds shifted their allegiance from Safavid Shahs to Ottoman Sultans from that day onwards and the Turkomans joined up with the Shah (who was a Turk himself). Why do you think the population of Iran is 30% Azeri Turkish today? Because they were expelled due their Shiasm, and the lands that were emptied were re-filled by the Sunni Kurds. An empty land does not generate any income for the empire. Prior to this Safavi-Ottoman wars, the Kurds in Anatolia were merely around Hakkari, Sirnak region, with most of the population located in Iraq and western Iran. You have to read and learn history from history books, not from some nonsense written by a blind nationalist.

Internationally renowned experts compiled my map - NOT Kurdish nationalists - but Ozgur read a history book - would that history book have been written in TURKISH and compiled by TURKS

Doesn't matter what your ancestors ruled in the past, it's all history now. If we follow your logic, the Turks should be running a country spanning from central Asia all the way to central Europe.
