Shutting AKP and DTP down: democratic thing to do?

PostAuthor: Diri » Sun Apr 27, 2008 3:40 pm

Interesting article... Have a read:

‘Closure of AK Party and DTP will serve separatism and violence’

“It should be questioned. Are you insane? For 80 years you have had the fear of division, but there are efforts to close down the only political party that will weaken pro-Kurdish politics and separation efforts. If the AK Party and the DTP are closed, this will mean all the parties that get the votes of the Kurds are shut down. Then what will you do if the Kurds say: ‘That is enough. You take your republic; we are going to have Kurdistan.’ We know that you love your institutions and principles, but are you sure that you love your country?” asks Akyol in the article.

“There is a new generation in the region consisting of people who were born and lived under pitiable conditions. They are totally hopeless. They don’t have any expectations for the future. Anti-democratic interference and the closure cases are just increasing this mood. The parties before the DTP were inexperienced. They were not able to put forward projects, but the DTP is not like this. It at least has considerable experience in municipalities. But if a party like this is closed down, practically the whole region will be excluded from politics, and other options will come to their agenda,” Tanrıkulu says.

Tanrıkulu notes that this option could even be the right of “self-determination.” “The United Nations says if a group is not able to represent itself in politics in the country, it has a right to self-determination. If Kurds feel that they don’t have any other option, they may start to discuss it. I think the Constitutional Court has to take this fact into consideration when it is reaching a verdict,” Tanrıkulu says.

It's obvious it's not ''democratic thing to do''. If this happen Kurds will do more violence for freedom since not able to get rights democratic peaceful way.

If all 3 parties are shut down that means MHP could take over.

CHP will not be closed. It is impossible. They will just ignore what CHP did.(You are talking like we have justice at our courts.)

And even all parties are closed, still MHP cannot take over parliment. AKP would still have majority of parliment so goverment. Aim was not to change goverment but not to let AKP change constitution.

You have a point zurderer. But I doubt that it will be a success for Kemalists. Because I think AKP will gain more votes, hence more seats in the parliment, in the next election following up the decision of supreme court. AKP will be able to assign whoever she wants to the critical posts of the State and install a newer constitution.

Abdullah Gül is already doing it but It will take a lot time to change all system.

It was stupid to open a war agains system soo early. Even He is charismatic and courageous, Erdogan is not much intelligent.

The "war" to the system is not fruitless zurderer, AKP filled the high posts of the state with Islamicly oriented bureaucrats. There left the chancellors of the universities and the high posts of the jurisdication to conquer.

There is not Islamicly oriented bureaucrats. There is rightists bureaucrats. For Islamicly oriented bureaucrats, AKP need 10-15 year more.

Oh and I do not trust rightist bureaucrats more than CHP itself.

Well, you know often Kemalists complain how the adherents of Fethullah Gulen order were employed in inner core of the state. Though there are some rightists bureaucrats assigned, a great many of them are Islamicly oriented. For instance, Supreme Court has an Islamist head, head of the Central Bank is Islamist. Also it is rumoured that many Fethullahcis are employed within the police. I doubt that Kemalists will be able to avert this trend.

"Islamic" doesn't mean that you don't drink alchohol... Excuse me, but that just isn't the definition of "Islamic"... MANY Muslims drink - but are pious Muslims at the same time...

Keep in mind that there are several interpretations which can be drawn from the holy Quran...

Being religion-friendly is one thing, and being a conservative/fundamentalist Muslim is another...

Let's not mix the two...

It depends on your vision on democracy. If you see DTP as terrorist supporters, there wouldn't be anything wrong with shutting them down. In Belgium courts closed down extreme rightists parties. If you see them as a legal Kurdish political party, then you are against a closure. Or because you are afraid it would result in more violence and legitimization of violence.
The suppression of ethnic cultures and minority religious groups in attempting to forge a modern nation were not unique to Turkey but occurred in very similar ways in its European neighbours - Bruinessen.
