ERBIL, Dec. 21 (AKnews) – Turkey’s Higher Education Council has approved a bid by the Tunceli University, in the mainly Kurdish populated Dersim province, to open Kurdish language centers, Turkish media reported Wednesday.
The opening approval of opening of Kurdish language centers marks a significant change in the Turkish policy towards the Kurds ni the country whose language was prohibited by law for decades.
The use of the language is still prohibited by law in the government institutions.
For the first time in the history of Turkey, a court in Diyarbakir city allowed earlier this month a group of Kurds accused of links with the Kurdish rebel groups to deliver their defense in Kurdish after it established they did not speak Turkish.
