Munzur Springs: A cult site in Dersim

The Turkish government tries with all possible methods to destroy the cultural customs in the province of Dersim

The current target of attack is the legendary Munzur Springs, which are a place of worship for the predominantly Alevi population. The area will be built over and will only be accessible as a tourist attraction for an entrance fee.

There is resistance to this. Hasan Şen, Secretary General of the Federation of Dersim Associations (DEDEF), describes the commercialization of the Munzur Springs in Dersim as a continuation of the genocide of 1937/38.

Munzur River appears in numerous legends and traditions. It was named after shepherd Munzur Baba, who, according to a legend, poured buttermilk in the present spring region in Ovacık district, thus creating the forty springs of the Munzur.

Regarding the meaning of the springs, Hasan Şen says: "Just as the Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem is a place of worship for others, the Munzur Springs are a place of devotion for us. For us, devotions are not something that can only take place between four walls. Even protecting nature or a single tree is a place of worship.”

The DEDEF General Secretary points out that the Munzur Springs are the highest point in the Euphrates basin. The water flows from Dersim to Anatolia, from Syria to Iraq and from Kuwait to the Persian Gulf, according to Hasan Şen, who says: "A fish in the Gulf has a right to this water, as does the mountain goat in the source region. This right must be respected.”

According to Şen the real purpose of the commercialization project is to alienate the people of Dersim from their faith and roots. Just as the efforts to create one ethnicity, one language and one almighty ruler, there is an attempt for there to be only one faith. In the Turkish state, the aim is a society consisting of one type of person, in which everyone thinks and lives like the rulers: "That was what was wanted to be enforced in Dersim in 1938.

A genocide was committed to this end at the time. Today the holy places are wanted to be changed for it. The Munzur Springs are a place of worship for us and will be turned into a commercial site.”

So far, Dersim has not been assimilated. The Turkish state is now trying to force the region under its rule by interventions against faith and cultural structure, says Hasan Şen and adds: "The people of Dersim are against this project. We don't want it and we will do everything we can to prevent it."

The springs of the Munzur belong to the holiest places of the Alevite population in the province of Dersim (Tunceli). The government wants to close the source region near Ovacık district and redesign it for profit.

The population has not been involved in the project in any way, and a comprehensive ban on assembly has been imposed locally. The area is cordoned off by the military and police. Free access and picnics were forbidden. The people of Dersim are protesting against the environmental destruction.

HDP member Ali Önlü has visited the region for an inspection. He describes the government's actions as unacceptable and says: "The government did these things even before 1938 [the genocide] in the name of 'investments'. Roads and military bases were built in the name of civilisation. All this was aimed at separating the population from its historical roots.”

Önlü continued: “They march into an important religious place with tanks, artillery and excavators. This shows their mentality of destruction towards this people and this country. They treat the language, faith and identity of these people with disrespect.

the time of the Gezi resistance, the AKP leader had spread the lie that the people went to the mosques wearing shoes. But here, at the Munzur Springs, they march with weapons. The streets are closed and they control the people, what they have in their pockets.

They only allow a certain number of people. But here is not only a centre of faith, but also of culture and life. The protests of the people in Dersim, the faith institutions and the civil society organization are important and right. This is an unacceptable attack."

Turkey's mining threatens Dersim

Residents of villages in Turkey’s Dersim province (Tunceli) warn that a new mining project in the area will have a devastating environmental impact

“These materials mix with the water resources, and this causes dangerous water poisoning,” said Hayder Bal, a local from the town of Polur. “Later this water mixes with Munzoor Baba water and poisons our water. The results don’t end there, it also mixes with Murat Su and flow into the Euphrates.”

Locals are attempting to resist the project, saying in addition to the environmental damage, it is an effort to push them off their lands.

“They want to evict us. This is the government’s policy imposed on us, which it sees as lawful,” said local Ali Dameer Kol, who notes that damage to the water prevents farmers from being able to farm.

Some law experts deem the projects as unlawful and say it must not be allowed.

“These projects are against the law. Our province has a plan for environmental regulation,” says lawyer Barsh Yalderem. “These areas are of great importance in terms of the environment and these areas have to be preserved.”

Villagers resist against
mining activities in Dersim

Local people protested the establishment of a mine in Ekirek village of the Çemişgezek district in Dersim province

It is reported that the mine to be established by the firm named Gökalp Maden in the area of Merekler-Sekatır-Kıraçlar does not have a license to operate a mine. Company officials of the Gökalp Maden came to the region with construction equipment in the early hours of the morning for drilling.

The villagers, having learned of the arrival of the officials, gathered in the area and blocked the road, not allowing the construction equipment to enter the site. The villagers continue their resistance, stating that they would not let the mine pass in Dersim.

"THE GOVERNMENT PROMOTES RENT"

The Munzur Protection Board and the Dersim Associations Federation (DEDEF) released a joint written statement which said: "While we see daily news about killing of mountain goats in Pülümür Valley, Hozat-Hoşan Pond Project, killing of thousands of fish by electricity given to Pülümür river, now mineral exploration search is set to start in Merekler-Sekatır- Kıraçlar area in Ekirek (Gözlüçay's) village.

The villagers protested the situation and gradually prevented workers. We stand by the village of Ekirek, which protects its living spaces, and we invite everyone to stand by their just and legitimate resistance."
