The Light of Expanse in Krakow
A joint exhibition titled “The Light of Expanse” opened this week at the historic Pałac Sztuki (Art Palace) in Krakow, Poland, showcasing the works of prominent Kurdish artists
The event, organized by Ziyad Raoof, owner of ZR Gallery, and curated by the distinguished Polish art critic Wacław Kuczma, celebrates the dialogue between Kurdish creativity and European artistic values.
Held under the patronage of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Representation in Poland, in cooperation with the Kurdistan Center for Art and Culture (KCAC) and sponsored by ZR Gallery, the exhibition highlights the richness of Kurdish modern art and its growing international recognition.
The Pałac Sztuki, where the show is hosted, is one of Poland’s oldest and most prestigious art halls, with a 130-year history of presenting renowned artists from across Europe.
- The exhibition features 26 Kurdish artists, including Ako Kassan, Azad Hama, Bahadin, Baldin Ahmed, Bala Ahmed, Bashdar Noori, Bayan Jaff, Daniel Kassab, Dashti Jangi, Hama Hashim, Zhilamo, Kawsar, Malva, Mohammed Arif, Nabaz Baban, Namo, Nasser Qazzazadeh, Noorim, Qarani Jamil, Rawand Jaafar, Rezan Batoola, Sahira Mohammed Ismail, Shamal Saadullah, Shukr Bilbas, and Tara Abdullah
The curatorial statement describes the pieces as an “emotional discourse” linking the inner and outer dimensions of beings longing for a peaceful life, away from the violence of reality.
The exhibition serves as a bridge between Kurdish and European cultural spheres. Through abstract forms, symbolism, and expressive imagery, the artists address social injustice, the marginalization of women, and the erosion of moral and creative freedoms in societies marked by conflict. Their works channel the trauma of war and displacement into art that evokes resilience, beauty, and introspection.
By bringing Kurdish art to one of Europe’s historic cultural capitals, “The Light of Expanse” underscores the growing presence of Kurdish artists on the international stage. It also reflects a broader cultural diplomacy effort by the KRG Representation in Poland to strengthen cross-cultural ties and highlight the intellectual and emotional depth of Kurdish artistic identity.
