Seventh fatal attack in seven days

A man has died after being stabbed on the streets of London, making it seven fatal attacks in the last seven days

It happened in the early hours of Saturday in Newham, bringing the number of murder investigations launched by Scotland Yard this year to 140.

One man has been arrested after police were called to the scene in Hanameel Street shortly after 2am, where the victim, believed to have been 29, was pronounced dead.

Police were called to Hanameel Street in Newham

There has been a flurry of knife-related deaths in London since last weekend, including a spate of three within a few hours in three separate attacks on Thursday.

Ebrima 'Brim' Cham, 35, died after being targeted by three men at a house in Hounslow shortly after 11.30am.

Officers arrested a 44-year-old man on suspicion of murder, but he was released with no further action.

Later that evening, a man in in his 20s was stabbed to death in Bromley Road, Walthamstow.

Police were called to the scene at around 7.15pm and a 29-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of murder.

And about an hour later, a man in his 30s was found dead in a car after an attack near Scratchwood Park, Barnet.

Police on the scene in Barnet following Thursday's stabbing

The incidents on Thursday came after a number of fatal stabbings last Saturday and Sunday.

Albert Amofa, 33, was knifed in the leg outside his house in Drake Road, Croydon, during an attempted car robbery, before dying in hospital two days later.

Nobody has yet been arrested in connection with the attack, which happened on Sunday evening.

Last Saturday night, a man in his 40s died after being stabbed at a property in Marlborough Road, Dagenham.

Police also found a woman in her 50s with non-life threatening injuries at the scene and a 59-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder.

That same day, Dmytro Balaban was stabbed to death in Brent.

Volodymyr Holovatskyi, 23, has since been been charged with the murder of the 28-year-old.

Jaden Moodie, 14, is the youngest of London's knife crime victims this year.

The past week means the number of murders recorded by the Metropolitan Police now eclipses its total from last year, when the force recorded 135.

The Home Office recorded 141 in the capital for 2018.

Wall of Silence

Gang murder investigations blocked by 'wall of silence'

Image
Some teenagers still holding table tennis bats as others ran for their lives

Police investigations of gang murders are increasingly held back by a "wall of silence", the BBC has found, with witnesses across the country unwilling to give evidence. The trend emerged during the BBC's First 100 Killings project which has tracked homicides from the start of 2019 and monitored dozens of murder trials. Youth workers, police and prosecutors believe witnesses are afraid for their own safety.

On a February evening in 2019, the Marcus Lipton youth club in Brixton, usually a place for children to socialise in safety, was about to erupt in violence.

Outside, a BMW pulled up and two teenagers, armed with long knives, ran towards a group gathered near the entrance and chased them inside.

David Marriott, 38, was in the sports hall running a football coaching session for Lambeth Tigers with children as young as three.

"Everything happened really fast…The boys came running through the hall that we were working in. Everyone was really alarmed," he remembers.

One of the young men who was being chased - 23-year-old Glendon Spence - fell over and was cornered by the two attackers near a table tennis table.

He received stab wounds to his hand and arm as he fought to fend off the blows.

Then a blade slashed his thigh, penetrating a major artery.

His assailants ran out and back to the car, which was later burnt out and abandoned.

Meanwhile Mr Spence managed to struggle to his feet, before collapsing in a heap.

"He was bleeding really heavily," says Mr Marriott. "We found where he had been stabbed and where the blood was coming from and we tried to stop the blood coming out."

Image
It is still not clear whether Glendon Spence, 23. was the intended target

But despite his best efforts and those of paramedics, the young man died on the floor of the youth club he had attended since his childhood.

"It was very difficult. The young children saw blood everywhere," says Mr Marriott. "Some of them are still trying to get over it."

Mr Spencer's killing was one of 100 in the first four months of 2019 which were tracked by the BBC as we looked into the reasons for the recent spike in homicides.

The youth centre became a crime scene and a murder investigation was launched - but police hit an early obstacle as key witnesses would not talk to them.

This made it difficult to understand the motive and whether Mr Spence or any of the people he was with, were the intended target of what police suspected was a gang attack.

"It's unclear in this case who the intended gang were, or even who the attacking gangs are," says DCI Richard Vandenbergh, who leads a homicide team based at Lewisham Police Station.

Image
The attackers were armed with long knives

Officers focused on what they could prove and had an early breakthrough.

In the melee a youth worker overheard a reference to "R1".

A gang intelligence officer worked out this was the street name for Rishon Florant, then aged 17, who had links to a south London gang and a string of convictions for knife possession.

He had also been excluded from school and banned from entering Lambeth at the time of the murder.

Florant's name was immediately circulated to police and border officials at ports across the country.

"He was actually found trying to leave the country at Heathrow Airport and was boarding a flight en route to Uganda," says DCI Vandenbergh.

Fingerprints and CCTV

Now the hunt was on for the second suspect.

Sifting through CCTV at the youth club, officers saw he had touched an outside gate and the table tennis table close to where Mr Spence was stabbed.

Unlike Florant, this suspect was not wearing gloves so police were able to extract a fingerprint.

In the national DNA database they found a match to Chibuzo Ukonu, another 17-year-old youth with a criminal record for knife possession and drug dealing.

He was tracked to Manchester where he was arrested.

Image
Chibuzo Ukonu (L) convicted of manslaughter and Rishon Florant (R) convicted of murder

The pair were charged and put on trial at the Old Bailey.

Florant was convicted of murder and jailed for a minimum of 18 years.

As he walked from the dock to the cell, he smiled at his friends in the public galley when they shouted 'Free R1". He has lodged an appeal against his conviction.

Ukonu was found guilty of manslaughter and will serve 14 years in a young offender institution.

Image

Although Mr Spence's parents can take some comfort from these verdicts, they are still no clearer as to why their son was killed.

Not knowing the motive leaves a huge gap in understanding what this homicide was all about, "frustrating" for DCI Vandenbergh who wants to understand the background to help prevent others. The men's accomplices, such as the driver of the BMW, have still not been caught.

But it's not the first time DCI Vandenbergh has come up against the wall of silence.

"It's incredibly common, especially with some of the under-25 knife crime murders that we have where there may be gang links. We've had instances where people will just not talk to us," he says.

Mr Marriott understands why: "No-one wants to be labelled as a grass or a snitch, and if people do go down that road there will be consequences."

They "could be beaten up, someone could get killed" and "as much as the police will have an opinion that these boys should come forward, it's easier said than done. Because if they were to come forward, what would the police do to protect them?".

Image
Football coach David Marriott understands why witnesses will not come forward

His assessment is bleak: "I wouldn't advise that they come forward. They've got to turn a blind eye to it."

For Mr Marriott, who grew up in Brixton, the key is to prevent the violence happening in the first place. That means offering more support for community groups like his, which help 500 local boys.

"We do everything we can to get the kids off the street but lack of facilities is a huge problem," he says.

Friends of Kamali Gabbidon-Lynck left candles where the 19-year-old was stabbed to death in north London

In the 100 killings cases followed by the BBC we have seen how often gang disputes and turf wars escalate into deadly violence.

In October, two men and three teenage boys went on trial accused of murdering a rival gang member in a north London hair salon.

Kamali Gabbidon-Lynck, 19, bled to death in front of people, including children.

Earlier his friend Jason Fraser, 20, had been shot and stabbed eight times in Wood Green in scenes that "were reminiscent of a Hollywood film", an Old Bailey trial heard.

Murder convictions were secured but once again we glimpsed the price that can be paid for not keeping quiet.

One of the teenage defendants was stabbed in prison because he had given an account to police, albeit very limited, of what happened that night.

'Stand up and be counted'

"In most of the gang violence that we prosecute, there are witnesses who have plainly seen something which would be relevant to the prosecution but are not prepared to give evidence," says Julius Capon, head of the Homicide Unit of the Crown Prosecution Service in London.

He believes it's getting worse.

"We're getting more instances of knife and gang crime and as a result we're getting more people who are reluctant to come forward," he says.

For prosecutors like Mr Capon their reticence is "an enormous handicap", meaning that "injustice is being caused, because those that have killed people are not facing the justice they should".

He acknowledges that people are afraid: "Frankly anyone that has witnessed a murder will be frightened about the repercussions but there are measures that we can put in place to protect people."

And besides, people have "a moral obligation to do your bit and come to court to give evidence".

"If you are worried about the number of, usually kids, that are being killed you have to stand up and be counted."

Back on the streets of south London, homicide detectives are struggling to breach another wall of silence.

It is more than a year since the unsolved murder in Tulse Hill of 16-year-old John Ogunjobi, who was chased and fatally stabbed by a group of men.

He died in front of his mother in a targeted attack.

DCI Vandenbergh believes that some of John's friends may have vital information that they have not given police and appeals to their consciences to help a grieving mum to know why it was that her son was targeted.

Jackie Sebire, national lead on serious violent crime at the National Police Chiefs Council, said there is a "group of disengaged young people" who do not trust "any authority figures", including police, teachers, and youth workers.

She told Radio 4's Today programme it would "absolutely" help if more witnesses and victims could remain anonymous.

But she said that decision was up to the judge presiding over the case, and that applications for anonymity may be rejected to protect the defendant's right to a fair trial

Facts:

The only protection is for a witness to go into witness protection:

A large percentage of young drug dealers/gang members live at home

Families furious at having to move and leave home, jobs, friends and relations behind

Siblings furious at having to leave school and friends etc

Witness will always live in fear especially if anyone has a photo of him

Parent beating son because he has caused so much trouble by being a witness

People involved must never contact friends or relations via social media

Thornton Heath Killing

Man, 60, stabbed to death in London two days before Christmas

A 60-year-old man was stabbed to death in London two days before Christmas.

The victim was found outside a property in Thornton Heath, Croydon, suffering knife wounds on Monday.

Police were called to Woodcroft Road at 9.30pm to reports of a stabbing and he was pronounced dead at 9.49pm.

A 50-year-old male was arrested at the scene on suspicion of murder.

The victims family have been informed, though formal identification awaits, and a murder investigation has been launched.

Detective Chief Inspector Simon Harding, who is leading enquiries, said: "The victim was found injured in a residential street. While it is not a heavy footfall location, there may have been members of the public travelling through Woodcroft Road who saw something. I urge those people to come forward and speak to my officers without delay.

“No matter how insignificant you think it may be please do make the call. We are building the sequence of events leading up to and immediately following this attack which has led to a man’s death, your call could complete the picture.”

The man arrested was taken into custody where he became unwell.

He was taken to hospital where he is in a stable condition.

Enquiries into the incident are ongoing and a postmortem examination is to be scheduled.

Battersea murder

A man was shot and killed on his doorstep on Christmas Eve in south west London

Police officers were called to Battersea Church Road, Battersea, at about 9pm on December 24 to reports of shots being fired.

Police and the London Ambulance Service attended the scene, where a man believed to be in his 30s was pronounced dead.

Scotland Yard confirmed it had launched a murder investigation into the death.

According to the Mail Online, a gunman shot the victim on the doorstep to his townhouse property.

Neighbours described hearing multiple gunshots followed by a woman screaming for help.

Vittoria Amati, 60, who lives near the scene of the incident on Battersea Church Road, said: “I was watching television when I heard this round of shots. One after the other very quickly. There was between eight to 10 of them.

“I knew it was a shooting and I didn’t want to come out because I was scared it might not be safe.

“I then heard the screams of the wife. I came out and realised it was one of my neighbours. He was lying in front of his doorway in a pool of blood.

“He was still alive.”

Murderer cried

Model who stabbed fashion rival to death 'cried all the way to prison' - as he moans about 'stressful' jail life

A model who stabbed his fashion rival to death “cried all the way to prison” after being jailed for life, it emerged today.

Image
George Koh, 26, knifed GQ model Harry Uzoka, 25, during a pre-arranged fight to settle a long and bitter feud.

Image
Koh, pictured, stabbed his rival through the heart with a knife

Chilling CCTV shows George Koh brandishing a knife before stabbing Harry Uzoka to death

Image
Shocking CCTV footage showed Koh chasing down Harry in Shepherd's Bush, West London, on January 11 last year with two accomplices.

Harry was cornered behind a red Volkswagen before being stabbed in the heart. He later died on the pavement outside his home as the trio fled the scene.

Koh was jailed for 25 years and has now said he wishes he could “go back in time and change everything”.

Speaking from Belmarsh Prison, he told Metro.co.uk: “I strongly hope that one day someone reads up about my story, takes in my experiences and thinks twice about carrying a knife.”

He described the trial as the “most stressful time of his life” and added: “Every second seemed to feel like an hour, constantly.

"I was wondering how my life would turn out, what to say, how I’m possibly going to adjust to prison life.

I really felt sad and helpless that day. I was speechless. I cried all the way back to prison.

“During the trial, I felt a mix of regret and sorrow for Harry’s family as well as hopeless and lonely. I didn’t have my life and emotions in control.

“I was really lost. I just wished I could close my eyes, go back in time and change everything.’

“When everyone came back into court for the jury to deliver the verdict, my whole life stopped for a small second.

“I really felt sad and helpless that day. I was speechless. I cried all the way back to prison.”

Describing prison life, he added: “You have no choice but to obey orders from the prison, such as what time to wake up, when to get your lunch and dinner, when you’ll be allowed out of your cell.”

The pair had been locked in a bitter dispute after Harry became annoyed with the less successful Koh, who he believed was trying to copy his "look".

Koh had even bragged to a mutual friend that he had slept with Harry's model girlfriend Ruby Campbell.

On January 11, Harry and his flatmate Adrian Harper arranged to meet Harry for a confrontation and armed themselves with dumbbell bars.

Jurors heard how Harry was signed to Premier Model Management at the time of his death and had appeared in campaigns for Everlane and GQ whilst Koh had been on the books at IMG Models.

Teen stabbed to death at station
felt he had become walking target

A 16-year-old who was killed at a busy south London train station felt he had become a walking target before his death, his friends said

Louis Johnson, 16, was ambushed after being lured to a bridge over platforms at East Croydon at about 4.45pm on Monday.

He was killed in a violent attack lasting 40 seconds, said police who arrested a youth from Balham on suspicion of murder early today.

Police are now questioning a 16-year-old boy over the stabbing .

Louis, who lived in South Norwood, was travelling home to his mother after attending a Youth Offending Team meeting in Battersea.

Friends said the teenager felt he had become a “walking target” after surviving another attempt on his life earlier that day.

According to them, Louis had been excluded from school and was attending a Pupil Referral Unit in Wandsworth.

They fear he may have become caught up in a “postcode war” between rival gangs.

It was reported that YOT workers had told him take a taxi home.

Youth worker Marlon Sampson said Louis had been working towards achieving a construction qualification at Croydon College when he saw him just before Christmas.

The 36-year-old had worked with the teenager for about a year at his Walking With Giants drop-in centre.

He told the Standard: “He was always polite, respectful and really shy, when he talked to you could tell he was taking on board everything you were saying.

“When I went down there I heard it was Louis, I just thought it’s such a waste.”

Louis is the first teenager to be killed in the capital in 2020.

British Transport Police Chief Inspector Mark Lawrie said: “We are pursuing strong lines of enquiry and have CCTV footage at the scene.”

A spokesman for Croydon College said: "The Croydon College community was saddened by the tragic and needless loss of a young life at East Croydon station this week. The death has shocked the community as a whole.

"While Louis Johnson was not a student at Croydon College we believe he had aspirations to train in construction with us, and are saddened that he lost his life before he could do so.

"Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this difficult time."

I strongly believe that a section 60 stop-and-search order should remain active 24/7 in certain areas

Gun and knife attack in north London

A man is fighting for his life and another has been hurt after a stabbing and shooting as violence broke out on the streets of north London

Police and paramedics were scrambled to Alma Road in Enfield on Wednesday evening to what officers believe was an altercation between two groups of young men.

Two victims, one suffering a gunshot wound and the other a knife injury, were found at the scene shortly after 6.15pm. They were both rushed to hospital.

The condition of the man with gunshot wounds has been described as life-threatening.

The knife victim’s condition was not immediately known, a Scotland Yard spokeswoman said.

At this stage it is believed two groups of men, believed in their 20s, had been involved in an altercation, she added.

No arrests have been made.

A section 60 order, which gives police greater stop-and-search powers, has been put in place in the area. It was to stay in place until 4am on Friday morning as police continued their enquiries.

In statement, the Met Police said: “One man was found with gun-shot injuries and another had been stabbed. Both are in hospital and we await further updates on their conditions.

“The man who was shot is believed to be in a life threatening condition.

“At this stage it is believed two groups of men, believed in their 20s, were involved in an altercation.

Killer drill rapper
offered £150k record

A teenager jailed for life for murdering a rival in a gangland attack has been unmasked as a drill rapper who was offered a £150,000 recording contract while in prison awaiting trial

Jayden O’Neill-Crichlow, 17, who raps as SJ and has millions of YouTube views, was part of a group armed with a sword, knives and a gun that hunted down Kamali Gabbidon-Lynck “like a pack of animals” in Wood Green.

This savage wins support of millions on YouTube

The 19-year-old victim, a father-of-one, was stabbed as he sought refuge in a hairdressers.

His friend Jason Fraser, 20, was stabbed eight times and shot in the buttock but survived.

O’Neill-Crichlow, a former youth footballer, and four other gang members — Sheareem Cookhorn, 21, Tyrell Graham, 18, and 17-year-olds Shane Lyons and Ojay Hamilton — were all jailed for life at the Old Bailey on Monday.

The trial heard that O’Neill-Crichlow is a leading member of drill rap group the OFB collective, and was offered the contract after being arrested on May 16 last year over the February 22 murder.

On June 11, OFB’s YouTube account posted a video for the teenager’s song Youngest In Charge, which includes lyrics about getting his shank [knife] “saucy”, or covered in blood, and the line “I just see an opp [rival], let me take him out” followed by gunshots.

The song, which has more than 10 million views, appears to mock rapper Kelvin Odunyi, 19, who was shot dead outside a Wood Green cinema in 2018.

Prosecutor Oliver Glasgow QC told jurors: “Life, it would appear, has little value to them and is something to be taken away for almost no reason and then to be the subject of cruel and offensive bragging.”

Also in June, an OFB “crib session” hosted by radio DJ Tim Westwood was uploaded to YouTube featuring SJ and other rappers. The video, which remains online, has more three million views and also refers to Mr Odunyi’s death.

After Mr Gabbidon-Lynck’s killers were convicted last month, his mother Melanie called for radio stations and DJs to stop promoting drill rap. She said: “Why is it justifiable for music to be released about children killing one another and celebrating murders?”

The court heard the five killers were affiliated with Tottenham gang the NPK, while the victim and his friend were associated with the WGM gang from Wood Green.

On the night of the murder, the attackers cycled from the Broadwater Farm estate to Wood Green armed with the weapons with the intention of targeting rival gang members.

Cookhorn fired the gun as violence broke out, and Mr Gabbidon-Lynck was fatally stabbed as he tried to save his friend Mr Fraser from being attacked.

O’Neill-Crichlow, Hamilton and Lyons — known as “Sneakz” — were all jailed for life with a minimum of 21 years after being found guilty of murder and GBH with intent.

Murder Victim Kamali Gabbidon-Lynck

O’Neill-Crichlow and Hamilton, known as “Osav”, had previously pleaded guilty to possession of a knife. Cookhorn was sentenced to life with at least 28 years in prison after being found guilty of murder, attempted murder and possession of a firearm with intent.

Graham, who had pleaded guilty to knife possession, was given a 25-year minimum sentence after being found guilty of murder and attempted murder.

As the sentence was passed violence erupted in the dock between the killers, leaving a prison guard with a head injury.

Police, security staff and Mr Glasgow, who once represented Great Britain at the Duathlon World Championships, had to restrain a man who jumped down from the public gallery as objects including an umbrella and a seat from the dock were thrown across the court.

Detective Chief Inspector Simon Stancombe said of the killers: “Not content with the damage they had caused that night they then boasted about their murderous exploits in amateurish drill videos.”

He added: “I want to pay tribute to Kamali’s family who throughout this trial have maintained their dignity in very difficult circumstances.”

Boy fighting for life after 2 groups
battle in north London street

A teenager remained in a critical condition today after being stabbed during a street fight between two groups in north London

The 16-year-old was knifed repeatedly at about 4pm on Wednesday in North Hill, Highgate, less than 500 yards from George Michael’s former mansion.

Witnesses said they heard shouting as two cars pulled up alongside each other. The victim was driven a short distance to Broadlands Close and was seen tumbling from a dark Mercedes as police arrived to perform first aid.

It is believed both groups were armed. Officers recovered a large hunting knife from the scene.

One resident living at a £5 million house opposite the scene said: “I came past straight after and the police were interviewing a group of school kids. They looked very upset.”

Another witness said: “The air ambulance landed in my garden. There was so much commotion. It’s so sad.”

A woman in her eighties told the Standard: “I heard lots of shouting, and then when I looked outside the boy was lying in the road in a pool of blood. There were lots of police, they were all pumping his chest. He looked like he was going to die.”

A shopkeeper said: “There was lots of shouting, the two groups of men just came to a stop in the middle of the road. They must have known each other.

“The boy and his friend drove around the corner and then they had to stop because he must have been bleeding too much.”

Police said there had been no arrests and anyone with information is asked to call 101.

Clubber in brutal attack

A partygoer was left with a bleed on the brain after he was viciously beaten and kicked in the head at a London venue popular with reality television stars

The victim also suffered a fractured skull and spent a number of weeks in hospital following the attack at the Chelsea Lodge on the King’s Road.

The nightclub, which bills itself as the “ultimate hang-out location offering fresh Italian cuisine”, opened in 2018 and features an “apres” ski-themed nightclub.

Former Love Island contest Maria Wild, sisters Lucy and Tiffany Watson from Made In Chelsea and their co-star Olivia Bentley have all been pictured partying at the venue.

Witnesses told police that the victim was kicked in the head by one man and repeatedly punched by two others after falling to the floor during a fight in the early hours of April 20 last year.

Police have released CCTV of two men they wish to speak to (METROPOLITAN POLICE SERVICE)

Police were called at about 1.45am and the victim was taken to hospital.

On July 14 a man in his twenties voluntarily attended a police station in central London where he was interviewed under caution. He was released under investigation.

Police have urged anyone with information about the two men to contact officers (METROPOLITAN POLICE SERVICE) Please follow link at bottom of article for photos.

Detective Constable Nigel Pacquette said: “We are appealing for the public’s assistance in our investigation into this violent attack. We have reviewed large amounts of CCTV, taken witness accounts and pieced together the events of this evening in an attempt to identify those involved.

“This fight broke out shortly after an exchange of words between the victim and three other men. These men then proceeded to attack the victim who sustained severe head injuries which left him hospitalised for a number of weeks. He is still suffering the effects of these injuries today.

“I would appeal to anyone who may have spoken to these individuals on this night, or who knows of them to get in touch with police – either through direct routes or anonymously through independent charities including Crimestoppers and Fearless.”

Anyone with information should call police on 101, quoting crime reference 6010852/19, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Three guilty of horrific
rape of schoolgirl 16

Three north London men have been convicted for raping a 16-year-old schoolgirl, after one threatened her with a machete, robbed her and held her captive

Image

The three defendants, in their early 20s, were all found guilty of rape at Wood Green Crown Court on Friday morning, with one further convicted of robbery and false imprisonment against the same victim.

They will be sentenced at the same court on Thursday, March 19, and have been named as Roberto French, 22; Abdisalam Mohamad, 21, and Hilal Mohamed, 22.

Jurors heard how the victim had travelled to London from Bristol on August 13, 2016, when French held a machete against her throat while he robbed her in front of the other defendants.

The 22-year-old then falsely imprisoned her in a residential block in Enfield, where she was forced by the defendants to perform oral sex on each of them.

Once the ordeal was over, French followed the victim as she attempted to make her escape.

He was arrested on 15 August 2016.

Mohamad was arrested on 26 May 2017 and Mohamed on 12 February 2018. All were subsequently charged.

Detective Sergeant Charlotte Carter, of the North Area Safeguarding Team, said: “Roberto French, Abdisalam Mohamad and Hilal Mohamed put this young schoolgirl through a horrific ordeal. She was threatened with a machete, held against her will and raped multiple times.

“The victim and her family have shown tremendous strength and patience in supporting a prosecution, I would like to commend their courage, particularly in facing the defendants in court. It is due to their strength that three dangerous individuals have been convicted.

“I am hopeful that sentencing will reflect the severity of these offences and the trauma suffered by the victim."
