Zurna - Advice?

PostAuthor: Cra-Z » Fri Aug 23, 2013 5:56 am

I'm in Istanbul right now and I would like to buy a zurna. I was looking at some there was one made of beech wood for about $40, then there were 2 made out of plum wood for $75 or $100. I don't know how to play at all yet, but I'd like to learn. I should also be in Iraqi Kurdistan in December, so I wonder if they might be cheaper there. Does anybody have any advice as to what I should look for/watch out for? Anybody know what a good price might be? What about reeds? Should I buy some extras?

I just came back from Southern Kurdistan and I can tell you for certain that all good musical instruments comes from Turkey and Iran with higher prices considering the import fees.

Zurna as far as I know are the one made out of apricot wood and it goes for 150-200$ in turkey ,which is not bad if you like music .The reeds are cheap and 10 reeds will probably cost you less than 10$ so buy some extra ones .

My advice : buy a good one even if you are going to keep it for decoration :-D

Right for apricot wood, it is the same for Armenian duduk (which means apricot tree as fas as I know ) it gives that special sound to the instruments.

Oh, thanks so much for the replies! I must have my notification setting set up weird because I didn't know that anybody had replied. This is really good info. It's weird that in the place I went to in Istanbul, the most expensive one they had was $100. I guess I'll look into it when I'm in Turkey again soon.
