Advice Please - Trip to Kurdistan

PostAuthor: sarah » Sat Jul 22, 2006 5:27 pm

Just wondered if you oould offer me some advice. As you know I am planning to visit a friend in Duhok which I was really looking forward to. He has now told me that it would be better for him if I bring a friend with me as people will talk about him saying that he has brought a English girl to Kurdistan and if we go out to places it is better for him to me with 2 others and not just me. I said that I have nobody who will come with me he has now said that if I come alone then we will go and stay in Sulimanya and not with his family in Duhok. This has really upset me as not only did I want to see him but I wanted to know more about the culture and be involved in everyday life by staying at his home. Now it feels like he does not want anybody in his home town to see me with him, it feels like he is being very selfish and just thinking about himself. What do you think?

I think he just worries about what ppl think , he thinks if there be another person with you, peopel wont have Bad thoughts...and will look at u like guests and he wont have to explain peopel who is this girl with you ?
First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then YOU WIN !

Well, I see what he will be going through if he just take you alone because no one can shut people's mouth and i am sure he deosnt want that for his family. It is much easier for you, your friend and his family to take more than one person.

i think he is backward.
kurdistan is beautifull and you will love it.
I remember in my second relationship I had a relationship with Caucasian women and she wanted to meet my parents, I was scared and I begged my uncle to pretend he was my dad. She was Italian and Italians are very touchy. I took her to my uncles and we had lunch and I had a great time. My uncle told my father. My father beat me so bad it was a work of art. I ask my self why my uncle grassed on me. I think it was protectiveness. I don’t know how this might help you, but my girlfriends fault was that she didn’t try to fit in. I was 17 years old and the relationship did not last.
There is allot of backward people out there. You have to try very hard and understand the culture. Undoubtedly there is a Muslim influence and this does not help your case.
Good luck sarah.
