Viewers of the The School That Tried To End Racism break down in tears

Viewers of The School that Tried to End Racism were left in tears after an 11-year-old ginger haired boy broke down and fled the classroom as he tried to talk about white privilege with his classmates.

Pupils in Year 7 at Glenthorne High School in South London were separated into 'affinity groups' of white and non-white students to discuss race and ethnicity during a three-week experiment in Channel 4's new documentary The School That Tried to End Racism, which aired tonight at 9pm.

The segregated affinity groups took place once a week, while 24 pupils aged 11 and 12 had further workshops and lessons together on white privilege and racial inequality throughout the programme.

But Henry, 11, became emotional after being separated from his non-white friends during the first session and, upon being asked to share what he had learnt with the class, broke down in tears and fled the room.

Many of those watching the programme were left in tears over the scene, with one commenting: 'Henry is an absolute gem, I'm tearing up seeing how upset he gets that he was put in a group based on his race.'

One commented the sobbing emoji, writing: 'Omg this ginger boy running out crying when he was grouped with the other white people.'

Another wrote: 'Yep, already cried. 11-year-olds should not have to feel worried about their race and how that will impact their life.'

Another added: 'Watching Henry cry is very emotional.'

A fourth commented: 'These kids are amazing. Henry could teach so many adults a lot of things.'

Viewers praised Henry online for his attitude towards race, with many saying the emotional moment had left them sobbing

The class of 11-year-olds in their first year at secondary school volunteered to take part in the three-week programme, aimed at reducing unconscious bias, at the school which has a nearly 50/50 make-up of white and non-white pupils.

The scheme separated children by race into affinity groups, to allow them to have conversations and discussions about race.

Teachers were trained to run the affinity groups, with Dr Nicola Rollock, an academic who works on race relations, and Professor Rhiannon Turner, joining the school throughout the experiment to observe how the children behaved.

Dr Nicola explained: 'The approach to race in this country has been one of colour blindness. We pretend we don't see race. That approach isn't working.
Who is Mariama Richards?

Mariama Richards is an American diversity and inclusion practitioner who started affinity programmes at schools in New York and Washington DC.

Although her initial schemes were voluntary, they were later made mandatory.

She launched the schemes while working as the Director of Progressive and Multicultural Education at Ethical Culture Fieldston School, where she launched mandatory affinity groups in the lower schools in 2015.

The mandatory programme was built into the school day, with 8-year-old children of all races separated into racial 'affinity groups' once a week for five weeks.

During 45 minute sessions, they would talk about race - what it meant to be a member of that race, their commonalities and differences, and other people's perception of them.

The goal was that children would feel free to raise questions and make observations that in mixed company might be considered impolite.

Once the smaller race groups had broken up, the children would gather in a mixed-race setting to share, and discuss, the insights they had gained.

The experiment aimed to to help children learn to break unexamined silences and use their voices to discuss race and ethnicity honestly.

'You could say, 'I'm not racist.'' But actually the actions might contradict what was coming out of our mouths.'

The first task was a game built by a group of professors at Harvard University, which is now widely accepted as a benchmark for measuring unconscious bias.

During the test, students were shown pictures of black faces and white faces with a list of positive and negative words.

They were told to associate the negative words with black faces and positive words with white faces, and were timed to see how quickly they did it.

After it emerged that 18 out of 24 pupils had an unconscious bias towards white people, Henry revealed to his friend that he 'felt bad' about the test

Halfway through, the test changed to match negative words with white faces and positive words with black faces.

After the test, Mr Grant asked the children to tell him their thoughts, with one student called Henry explaining: 'Personally, I don't think that there was too much of a problem. People overthink it.
How does the experiment work?

Inspired by similar experiments by Mariama Richards in the US, for three weeks, 24 Year 7 students, aged 11 and 12 and from diverse ethnic backgrounds, were given a programme of classes to explore their racial heritage and issues around ethnicity.

The groups were segregated into a white and non-white group for one session a week, for three weeks, and encouraged to discuss race and ethnicity.

The hope is that by separating children by race, they are able to be more frank and honest about their experiences, without fear of offending or feeling uncomfortable.

The groups then come back together to discuss all that they have learned.

The goal of the experiment is to encourage a more honest discussion about race, with the aim that it will break down barriers and increase mutual understanding.

The aim is that intervening at an early stage can help to change children's attitudes before they become crystalised with adulthood.

He added: 'I don't think much about race. It's just not normally something I discuss.'

Professor Rhiannon explained: 'Research shows for 11-year-olds, making friends from different racial groups is easier.

'But as children get older, there is a process of self segregation where children split off into different racial groups on the basis of their ethnicity.

'Intervening at this age if crucial if we are to target and change children's attitudes before they become crystallised with adulthood.'

After a break, the teacher explained that the results showed there was an unconscious bias, with the majority of the class showing the bias towards white people by completing the task of associating positive words with them more quickly.

Eighteen out of the 24 pupils showed a significant preference towards white people, with two showing a black preference and four showing no bias at all.

Dr Rhiannon explained: 'We are exposed at an early age to white people in positions of power, white heroes and heroines.

'All of these influences tell us that white people are better than black and ethnic minority people in society.'

Speaking at the water fountain with his friend Bright, Henry admitted: 'I know they say not to feel bad about it, but you still feel bad about it because you know you've done something wrong.'

The youngster confided in his friend Bright, revealing that while the teachers had told him 'not to feel bad', he still felt like he had 'done something wrong'

Students, including girls Beth and Miyu and boys Bright and Henry, were asked to divide into white and non-white groups, with the idea that the children could discuss their experience of race without judgement.

In the white group, discussion was stilted and the pupils struggled to know what to say, as Mr Grant asked them: 'Have you ever thought what it means to be white?'

One of the girls admitted: 'It doesn't really mean anything to be white.'

Meanwhile in the non-white group, the children danced and laugh and sang as they discuss their respective ethnicities and heritage.

And, after he was separated from his non-white friends for an affinity group, Henry broke down in tears in front of his class

Bright revealed: 'I love being described as black.'

Observing the difference between the two, Dr Nicola said: 'The contrast between the two rooms is phenomenal. This room is like a carnival, and this room is like a funeral.'

Henry told his group of white peers: 'Listening to their group, it sounds like they're enjoying it a lot. But I don't know if that's because we're not there...or...'

Meanwhile Professor Rhiannon said: 'Henry's experience, as an outsider, is a new experience and it's quite an uncomfortable one.'

Unable to contain his emotion while his classmates appeared to laugh at him, the youngster fled the room and was comforted by a teacher

After being separated, the groups came back together and are asked to provide feedback.

Lauren, who was part of the white-group, explained: 'We want the non-white affinity group to know that we don't think any higher of ourselves because of how we look.'

And Henry burst into tears and said he actually felt 'jealous' of the other group before he fled the room.

Later, speaking to his parents Kevin and Sarah, he cried again, explaining: 'What we were talking about is what it means to be white. And it felt really weird. I didn't feel comfortable talking.

The 11-year-old was comforted by his teacher as he revealed he was struggling with the experiment

'If I had the choice, I would be with my friends, not just by race, because that feels awful.'

He told the camera: 'Since the start of my life, I've been told that your race doesn't really matter. It's who you are as a person.'

In the second affinity group session, the children were asked to bring in objects that reflect their own cultural background.

Henry explained: 'I think we should not have affinity groups. Nearly every single person in our group said they feel less comfortable in affinity groups than in the whole group.'

Henry later broke down as he spoke to his parents about the affinity groups, and said he wanted to be 'with his friends' and not divided by race

And after Mr Grant asked why the white pupils found it so difficult to discuss race, the students admitted they were worried about upsetting others.

One of the pupils said: 'If we say something, that they think is or might be racist, it might be asking a simple question, they might be like 'Wow.''

Meanwhile, Henry said he was scared of saying something offensive, which could follow him around for life.

Other experiments included discussing 'what it means to be white', and doing a 'privilege walk', where they stepped forward or back in response to questions about their lives.

After several more days, Henry said he was learning to feel more comfortable about having the conversations, revealing: 'I've learnt that race is actually a bigger issue that I thought it was, and it's not talked about enough.'

The School That Tried To End Racism airs Thursday at 9pm on Channel 4.

The teachers should have more knowledge and understanding about the stigma attached to being a ginger

I am fed up with people complaining about how hard done by they are because of the colour of their skin or their religious beliefs

We all know that EVERY culture/race of indigenous people worldwide had their own religious beliefs until Christians/Muslims converted them

Or should I say killed them if they refused to convert

Christians and Muslims control most of the world becaue they are the two MOST BARBARIC groups of people

Christians and Muslims between them had the biggest guns the largest knives and the vilest personalities

Actually neither group has changed much since they came into being

Now Christians have stopped following the teaching of the Bible to make it more politically correct and Muslims have mellowed because fundamental Islam is no longer acceptable

Everyone seems to want something for nothing and many complain about being help back or even ridiculed due to their colour

Only a GINGER knows what it is like to be ridiculed

Because of Political Correctness most people have become afraid to speak their mind

I say bottoms to the lot of them

Connecting the world's redheads

Over the past seven years, Scottish photographer Kieran Dodds has been taking pictures of people from around the world with ginger hair.

Kieran himself is "pale and ginger", what he calls a cliché of Scottish national identity, but he wants to use the hair colour to illustrate a global phenomenon.

"It's not about hair," he says. "It's about humanity and how we are all made of the same stuff. With the ginger hair you can see that connection."

Scotland is an international hot spot for redheads and Kieran had no trouble finding and photographing them in his homeland.

But he also attended World Redhead Day in London, where he met people from around the globe.

He then travelled to the Russian city of Perm, another ginger hotspot, which is as far east as Iran and is at a similar latitude to the north of Scotland.

Redheads are more common in northern latitudes as the gene adaptation allows for the absorption of vitamin D with little sunlight.

However, Kieran also travelled to the Caribbean to photograph red-haired Jamaicans in a place called Treasure Beach, a result of a complex genetic inheritance which is likely to have involved Scottish sailors and settlers.

The result of Kieran's project is a book called Gingers.

He chose the title despite the term often being used as an insult.

"I feel like it is actually quite a good description," he says. "Because the hair colour is not red like a post-box or your blood, it is a mixture of gold and yellow and red all mixed together."

The 40-year-old says his own experience of growing up with ginger hair was echoed in many of the conversations he had with the people he photographed, no matter where in the world they grew up.

"It is very similar for most places," he says. "It is something that people thought was amazing and complimented you for as a kid.

"Then there is this period of primary school into secondary where it is a very visible trait and you stand out for it, so you get abuse or stupid insults.

"But once you are through that, if you have not come out too badly, people start to embrace it, almost as their unique selling point, their special power, and see it as an important part of their identity."

Kieran says the one place where he found a totally different attitude was Jamaica, where nobody he talked to said they had experienced negative comments.

"I kept trying to work out why," he says. "But I think it might just be to do with it being such a diverse country. Difference is the norm and this is just another difference."

Kieran says he began the project in 2013 in the run-up to Scotland's independence referendum, which got him thinking about the clichéd image of Scottish identity.

He says that even within Scotland, thought to have a higher percentage of natural redheads than anywhere else in the world, people with ginger hair were a small minority.

He wanted to show how even that tiny section of humanity was not an homogenous group.

"The ginger hair is how people see us Scots," he says. "I thought 'I want to use that cliché' and show that even in this tiny group there is diversity of look, background and opinion.

"If you live here, you realise the Scots are an incredibly diverse varied group."

At the same time, he made a visit to the National Gallery of Scotland where he discovered that the artists of the Renaissance had celebrated, even revered, ginger hair.

"I went in the Renaissance room and noticed that every single painting had a ginger person in it," he says.

"I thought it was funny that southern European painters were documenting Middle Eastern characters, usually Jesus and Mary, as ginger.

"That intrigued me because these are people that are seen as divine."

Kieran says seeing these divine characters with ginger hair made him see that normal people had the same dignity. That is why there are no famous ginger-haired people in the book.

"I did not want people to be distracted by some famous ginger person," he says.

"I want to look at normal, everyday people, your neighbour basically, and see that person is amazing, if you look."

It had been thought ginger hair was controlled by a single gene, MC1R, with versions passed on from both parents. However, more recent discoveries have suggested eight genes could be involved.

Less than 2% of the world's population are thought to have red hair.

In Scotland, the figure is thought to be about 13% - approximately 700,000 people.

Scotland is such a ginger hot spot that when Kieran appealed on social media for red-haired people to be photographed he was overwhelmed by the response.

The same was true in the Russian city of Perm, where he also put out a social media call.

"My local assistant did not believe it was going to be a big thing and then he was inundated with people," Kieran says.

The book is published on Friday 20 November and Kieran says: "I hope everyone can stare and wonder and enjoy the beauty of humanity.

"But also they can see themselves and understand that they've come from somewhere across deep-time. We are all part of a travelling species and I wanted to make those connections."
