As some of you may know - I am working on info for my site for Kurdish Fashion and my fashion designing in particular...

I am making a fashion map for Kurdistan. I need some help from you to establish basic facts. Local knowledge is dear and appreciated - but if you have knowldge about the other Kurdish provinces - in terms of fashion - please share your views...

I have below some pictures of the distinctly different fashions (with regional variations) as I see them - don't hesitate to add more proposals for "distinct styles" as I will take them into consideration and further research...

These are the "main" styles... As is with most Kurdish things - there are local and regional variations...
But let's just establish some "rules" for how we can say a style is distinct.

* The headgear is not a part of the style. (As all headgears are used in all parts of Kurdistan - mostly- unless we are talking about a "special case")

* The shoes and other ascessories do not make the style - and are also used in all parts of Kurdistan.

* When talking about the "style" we are in fact talking about the style of the dress/trousers/vest/cape/sash and also if there is a "must" ascessory... (Like Yêzidi Kurds have a special "cloth" which they wear vertically around their torso - over one shoulder and under the opposite arm...

South Kurmancî style (Soranî): (Kiras)












The Mohabad style is a bit different - the fabrics used are not see through as those further south...








North Kurmancî style: (Kiras û Fîstan)

These men - This pictures was taken in Southern Kurdistan - but from what I know - these types of trousers and styles of vest and clothings are also typical for Harran and Riha areas... Am I wrong??? And where in Kurdistan do they wear this and where do they wear "Ran û Bergûz"?




Okey - I know this was quite a mess I brought on you all... but I could need some help - As i want the site to be correct in its info... I am gonna make a MAP - I will have each of the "styles" in each region in a different color - in e.g I will divide Kurdistan into fashion regions and have a different color for each style and an example- picture, of the styles... I am mainly thinking of doing two maps - one for male fashion and one for female fashion...

So what I need help with is:

1) Where do you think the different styles are limited to?
2) Are there more "distinct styles"?
3) Do you know a "dead" style) - In e.g. one which is not in fashion today.
4) Do you agree with the dividing of the styles that I have done? (I don't agree myself so... Just come with proposals...)
5) Do the Goranî, Dimilî etc (and other "groups" have their own distinct styles?)
6) Do you know the names of Kurdish ascessories - like shoes, jewelry, head gear(hats,scarfs) etc - please provide pictures or drawing to illustrate the object...

I need spesific info - so I have a map here - with Kurdistan in it's current administrative regions... Please reffere to this map when telling me where you think the different styles are "limited" to...

Hey Heval - Thanks for the attention... I am working with the info for the site... Trying to find answers to my questions - Mostly I am doing fine - even though nobody is able to help... I would say - it will be ready in about two weeks - we have deadline the 15 of August! Not because of the Iraqi constitution.... LOL But because I will start at the university the 15th - so I need to be finished before that day...


Do you have the answer to any of my questions - like the clothes that man is wearing from the Hewreman region - is that what you would call typical for Hewreman?

Yeah, Diri, that is Hewramî, but typically, there are a few things in men's Hewramî clothing that is key...


One is the kilowî desmal or laçika ser (head kerchief), which is usually redish and black like the following Kurds...






And the other key piece is the kolebal (the vest with horns on it), worn by the Kurd on the left in the following...

Hope these help. The first photo was taken by me during my recent trip to Kurdistan. The last 3 were taken from the book, Kurdistan by Kasraian, Arshi and Zabihi, if you should use them...

Heval thank you for the names and pictures... The Kolebal is a "relative" thing... I have seen it other plces - like in other parts of Eastern Kurdistan- Also I was told by my parents that it is a very old traditional gear - which is now mostly found in the East and was often used by the Soranî Kurds - and less often by Kurmancî Kurds - except for those in Colemêrg, Badînan and Urmiye area...

Please if you have more pictures, information or just thoughts you wanna share - I would be VERY glad - I need some flesh on the site - and your local knowledge is important...

I have a few questions though - Do you think this fashion with the Kobale was "invented" in Hewreman? Hewreman used to be a VERY isolated area - as the name implies (Hewreman - "They stayed together")... And is famous for it's location on the hillside almost 80-90 degrees steep skywise...

And are there specialities for the women of Hewreman which you can't find other places?

Yeah Diri. I am positive that the Kolebal originated in Hewraman. Even now, the majority of Kurds you find wearing it are in Hewraman. Outside of Hewraman, those who tend to wear it are Sivans who have a version of it that is longer than the ones in the pictures I posted.

The Hewramî women's dresses are actually very very unique, but I unfortunately do not have any pictures of them to show you. I will try and find some for you...

Heval - Thank you VERY MUCH you are being of GREAT help! And if you have difficulties finding a picture for the womens style - you can describe it for me... But naturaly a picture says more than a thousand words...

Thanks for the info about the Kolebal! That was very valuable info! And do you know why Hewramî Kurds have "picked" the Kilowî Desmal with red and black? Or is that a rootless question...??? Maybe it is baseless- but if only Hewramî wear it in those colors... Then that is also veery interesting...

I thought the "horn" like jackets were only used by Shivan (or shepperds).
They were also much longer and owuld form some type of "sleping bag" so they can be confortable at night...

It's something I remembered, as a kid I had asked my older brother and this was the explaination he gave me....no may be he was just messing with me

No you are right my brother... But that is something else we call them "Kepen" and they are still used by shepherds from where I am - Hakkari/Urmiya... They do sleep in them and they have more pointy tips than "horn like"... So they aren't the same...

The Kolebal is more of a fashionable thing ( right Heval? )- which like Heval says is a local thing in Hewreman... But there are also variations of it - I have seen them in Hakkari - they are a bit longer and somwhat less pointy... But still have very pointy "horns"...

The Kepen is used by Shivans for sleeping in, for protection from wheather and also to make them look biger when for example wolves or other hostile animals come around so that they don't dare attack them... Bu the yalso have the Kengal dogs... So they are pretty much covered...
