Kurdish Poems

Hi,

My fiance and I are getting married in the New year. I would like to do a reading- but was thinking that it would be a lovely surprise for him if I read a Kurdish love poem or a said something really meaningful in Kurdish- like a famous Kurdish 'saying' or 'phrase'... but a poem would be better I think. Does anybody know of anything that might be suitable as part of out wedding ceremony?- and could you translate it into English for me aswell- so that I know what I am saying!

Hi Boo - first of all, welcome to Roj Bash Kurdistan...

Congratulations on your engagement and your upcoming wedding...

My suggestion would be to ask somebody (in your real life) to help you out - because reading something and HEARING it are two different things... Just as with English language, where you write ONE thing and read another - in Kurdish also, you'd have to learn the alphabet and grammar to be able to make out the sounds and structure...

But never the less - I am sure somebody can come up with a beautiful poem for you...

Congratulations, and good luck with your new life, also i'm agree with 'diri', he is right, but, what should i tell you, at this time ' Ehmed herdî' is all i remember sorry,but his poems are beautiful even they'r classics,..here is one of his fameous:

But I need some help, then! I am unfamiliar with some Soranî words:

"xawen telar û 'aneyee" = ?
"dulberan" = name of a place?
"qirranê" = nickle/daim?
"hellweran" = ?

And the two first sentences of the last verse you quoted are hard to understand - but the last two sentences of the same verse are understandable

xawen telar û 'aneyee" =
Kurdi: Wata kesêk, xawenî parew pull bêt û dollemend bêt û ballexane û xanu û vêlay cwanî hebêt..
English: 'someone rich,had alot of money,the owner of apartments and buildings..'

:: xawem = owner
:: 'aneyee = Money..Classic peoplez in kurdistan will say: 'ane or floos (an arabic word)..


Ew kesaney bo qirranê, çend dillyan hellweran!
:: my simple translation:
(those people who for some cent's sake,broke so many hearts)

"dulberan" = Aşqan (Lovers)
"qirranê" = in the ottmans empire the people called Money " qirran"
"hellweran" = Hellwerandî ştêk, 4 eg: payz gella zerdibuwekanî hellwerand
but in this poem this word means " broke" as i think...

I feel much more sure about the meaning of the verses now... Those were important words to understand...

About "Qirran" (cent/nickle/daim etc.) - that word is commonly used in Kurmancî... I was unsure if it was the same meaning... Thank you!

By the way - your English is excellent... My Soranî on the other hand, is not "excellent" so here is my humble and flawed rendering of the two verses:

gerçî dilldarî le xakî êmeda efsaneyee

Bê ewey hîç şik berê kujrawî ew çawaneyee

But in all reality, loving, in our land is fairytale
It's only for the son of wealth and riches
Beloved! But my heart is madned by this heart
It's without any doubt before the murder of these eyes

Honestly, I have to say: my translations do NO justice to the original... The words of Ehmed Herdî are beautiful and have not only one layer but in many cases several layers - so some sentences could be translated into two different meanings...

But I hope at least now, Boo, you will get an idea of what the poem is about...

And I find it well suiting for you to recite at your wedding ceremony - as it speaks of unconditional love...
