This is ginger nuts! Natural redhead banned from school for having hair that's too bright

A naturally red-head school pupil has been barred from classes for being too ginger.

Student Emily Reay, 17, has sported the same vibrant ginger hair for the last three years. But on her return lessons following the Easter Break she was ordered to tone it down.

Teachers at Trinity School, Carlisle, Cumbria, decided the colour was inappropriate.

Now, during her last year of A-levels, Emily - who is naturally auburn - has been told she is banned from lessons until she changes her appearance Emily was informed of the action being taken at the end of Monday's assembly.

"I was very angry at first, and then burst into tears. I've had the same colour for the past three years, and nobody at school has commented on it," said Emily at her home in Carlisle.

Described as a stunningly talented musician, Emily maintains her ginger hair is her trademark.

"Everybody knows me as that 'young ginger singer'. For me it is a confidence thing, If I had to dye my hair brown, I would lose this," said Emily.

Her parents Julie and Andy Reay went to the school to discuss the matter with sixth-form headteacher Andrew Winter.

They claim they were told that Emily's hair colour needed to be changed by this Monday or she would not be allowed to continue her education.

"I had to dye my hair to a more natural colour, or tone it down considerably," said Emily.

"I offered to pin it up, or wear a beanie hat, but I was told 'no' to both."

Her parents are backing their daughter's decision not to change her hair colour.

"They had her in tears. They do not realise what her hair means to her. The irony is she is playing Scaramouche in the school's adaptation of We Will Rock You, which is about society suppressing people's creativity and self-expression," said mother Mrs Reay, 44.

"The school's uniform policy clearly states no unnatural hair colours, like blue or green. Is ginger not a natural hair colour?" she added.

Emily said: "I was told my hair had been a bone of contention since the beginning of the school year, but they had let it slip up until now.

"But the laughable thing is my hair was brighter than this on prom night, and I won best hairstyle award."

Mrs Reay added: "Emily has natural auburn hair, but her hair has been this colour for so long now it is part of her. It's like living in the Victorian times. I would say her education is more important."

Determined not to miss out on important lessons, Emily, said she would return to school with her hair pinned up.

"I have to hope nothing is said. It is too damaging a stage for my education."

Sixth-form head Mr Winter issued the following statement: "Trinity School sixth-form students are role models for the rest of the school.

"We have a policy of maintaining high standards. All sixth form students are issued with information about what is acceptable or unacceptable at the start of the academic year.

"The vast majority of parents are very keen on our high standards."

Ha ha ! Anthea were you involved in the plot ?

Ginger-haired extremist 'planned to assassinate Prince Charles with a sniper rifle so Harry would become king'

A ginger-haired extremist accused of plotting a copycat Andres Breivik terror attack allegedly wanted to assassinate Prince Charles so Prince Harry would become king, a court has heard.
Loner Mark Colborne, who felt 'marginalised' because of hair colour, allegedly planned to 'take out' the Prince of Wales with a sniper to allow his youngest son to become heir to the throne.
The court heard how the 37-year-old allegedly dreamt up the terror plot at his home in Southampton, in an apparent bid to transform himself from a ginger-haired victim into a notorious military terrorist.

Most people have no idea what real colour prejudice is

Black and Brown skinned people have little to complain about in comparison with those of us who have ginger hair and very pale skin

Only us ginger haired people know the true meaning of colour prejudice X(

Colborne had a 'troubled childhood' and felt 'belittled by society' because of his ginger hair and pale skin

'I want them to see my transition from poor red-haired victimised minority that is constantly walked over to a fully transformed military terrorist striking at the hearts of the bigoted tyrannical rulers and of course the dark haired dark eyes Caucasian race. I will be heard through terror.'
The Old Bailey heard how the 37-year-old dreamt up the terror plot at his home in Southampton, in an apparent bid to transform himself from a ginger-haired victim into a notorious military terrorist

It is time we gingers came to power =))

Redheads’ gene linked to higher risk of skin cancer even for non-gingers

While it has been long known that people with naturally red hair and pale freckled skin are more sensitive to UV exposure that causes damage to DNA and may lead to skin cancer, the latest study has attributed the increased risk of melanoma to a specific gene.

A joint project of scientists funded by Cancer Research UK and the Wellcome Trust has found that variants of the MC1R gene “in charge” of the ginger type individuals is also linked to a higher number of potentially dangerous DNA mutations.

From 26 to 40 percent of melanoma patients are the gene carriers, the study published in the Nature Communications journal on Tuesday, said, adding that the "work has significant implications for understanding the genesis of melanoma in these high-risk groups."

While it has previously been thought that the type of redheads' pale skin pigment allowed more ultraviolet to reach the DNA, researchers have now proved it is also the gene itself that may be potentially harmful.

"It has been known for a while that a person with red hair has an increased likelihood of developing skin cancer, but this is the first time that the gene has been proven to be associated with skin cancers with more mutations," said David Adams, who co-led the study, as quoted by Reuters.

Having studied tumor samples from some 400 patients diagnosed with melanoma, the researchers have found 42 percent more mutations linked to sun exposure in tumors from people carrying the MC1R variant than among persons without the gene.

"This figure is comparable to the expected mutational burden associated with an additional 21 years of age," according to scientists.

But while around 1-2 percent of the world's population are redheads that might be aware of UV risks due to their complexion, more people are at higher risk caused by sun exposure without realizing it. People with ginger hair have two copies of the MC1R gene which alters melanin pigment production, but those with one copy may be fair-skinned but not have red hair.

"Unexpectedly, we also showed that people with only a single copy of the gene variant still have a much higher number of tumor mutations than the rest of the population," Adams said, with his study warning that people with highly photosensitive skin types, prone to sunburn and an inability to tan should take extra care when exposed to UV light.
