Four-month curfew to be lifted on Cizre Wednesday, says Turkey

A curfew imposed on the Kurdish Cizre district of Sirnak four months ago will be lifted Wednesday, Turkish authorities have announced.

According to a statement by the governor’s office the curfew will be lifted within different time frames.

The statement reads that the curfew will continue to be imposed from 7:30pm to 5:00 am every day.

The curfew was imposed by the Turkish government due to ongoing operations against the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) in Sirnak, Diyarbakir and other areas.

The Turkish army and the PKK have been locked in street fights since July as a result of which 200 civilians are believed killed and a quarter million forced from their homes.

Cizre was placed under siege by the Turkish army last year where dozens of civilians as well as army PKK guerrillas were killed.
