Sorani grammar sentences

PostAuthor: jjsora » Fri Jan 04, 2008 1:45 pm

I made the sentences below to get a feel of how different English tenses are expressed in Sorani. Can someone please check what I've written for accuracy and explain the ones I got wrong or didn't know?? Thank you!!

1. I speak Spanish.
2. I used to play video games.
3. I ate a cookie 5 min. ago.
4. Last year he was ill.
5. When his parents built the house, he was ill.
6. At the beginning of this year he has been ill, now he is fine again.
7. He had broken a leg, therefore he couldn't come to school.
8. I’m reading a book now.
9. I was working while she was studying.
10. I was eating there (- let's say lunch) until I got to know that there were cockroaches in the kitchen. Then I left (immediately).

11. I had been lying there for 3 hrs. before I fell asleep.
12. You will have been eating for 10 min. when I finish.
13. He wants me to go home now.
14. I would buy more food but I’m full now.
15. You are baptized now. ‘passive’
16. You were baptized for 5 min. ‘passive’
17. The city was destroyed by the fire ‘passive’
18. I had been baptized 3 times by 2001.
19. I will have been baptized 6 times by 2002.
20. If he paid me more, I would stay. (2 possibilities for ‘if he paid me more’)*
21. We would have built the house, if we had had the money.*

In my Sorani translation, I only translated the verb portion of the sentences. that's the only part I'm concerned with. So remember when correcting what I wrote I only need the verbs NOT the whole sentence. (unless you feel translating the entire sentence would be better for everyone viewing the post)

1. قسه کم
2. داکرديم
3. دخوارديم

Hi - welcome to Roj Bash Kurdistan! :)

Although my (reading) Arabic script isn't the best (takes me a minute to read three words :lol: )- I see that in nr. 5 you have to put the verb at the end:

Like this: Nexoş bû

Not: Bûwe nexoş

And I'll let somebody else help you with the rest of your sentences... I'm not sure even if I did that one right though - kak Sîrwan can correct and help you out... :)

But please do check in on "Introduce Yourself" - I've started a "Welcome" thread for you there... :)

hey dude, after my checkness i found that most of your sentence should be trnaslated completly not just verbs cause in kurdish the whole sentece will show the right mean of the VERBS but as you asked i just corrected the verbs to you perhps it is right since i'm been styding 19 years in sorani scripts :D or may be Kurdish teachers will translate it better than me, but i think someone have to translate the whole sentences to you if you want i'll try ..

Thanks for the translations!!! :) But I don't understand the two posts you just posted... What is the first post and what is the second post? Is the first post verbs only and the second post the whole sentences only? I'm confused because in the first post #3 IS translated but in the second post it is NOT translated. So I'm not sure which sentences to explain in more detail to you. Could you please explain the two posts and also what sentences you want me to explain. Thank you!! 8)

P.S. - ur english is fine. :)

Oh ok, thanks for the clarification. Now for the ones you don't understand:

#3 - "I ate a cookie 5 minutes ago." 'ate' is the past tense of 'to eat', I don't really know how to explain "5 minutes ago" maybe diri can help you out on that one.

#10 - "I was eating there (- let's say lunch) until I got to know that there were cockroaches in the kitchen. Then I left (immediately)." 'eating' is the present progressive of 'to eat', 'I got to know that' = 'I found out that'

#11 - "I had been lying there for 3 hrs. before I fell asleep." 'had been laying' is the past perfect progressive tense of 'to lie down'

#15 - "You are baptized now." The dictionary here says 'to baptize' is 'اعمد' the voice/verb tense here is passive present tense.
http://www.tps.edu.ee/nastik/ar-en/index.php?q=baptize

#16 - see above voice/verb tense here is passive past tense.

#18 - "I had been baptized 3 times by 2001." passive/ past perfect tense

#21 - "We would have built the house, if we had had the money." 'to build' is in the conditional past tense and 'to have' is in the past perfect tense

Hope that helps now. :)

PostAuthor: Diri » Fri Jan 04, 2008 10:43 pm

I'm here Sîver gyan :)

Daway lêburdin dekem. I will help you as much as I can - although I have a mental barrier with Arabic script! :lol: I still take a lot of time to read the script... But let me try and help you with specific things... Like you asked about #3 - here it is in Soranî in Latin script:

3. I ate a cookie 5 min. ago.
Min bîskvîtim xward pênc deqe pêştir (le êsta) YAXUD: Pênc deqe pêştir bîskvîtim xward (((you probably use another word for "bîskvît")))

Kaleha explained what "baptize" means - it's what Christians and Êzidî do with their children/confirmants - to enagurate them into Jesus' kingdom - to accept them into Christianity... It involves pouring water over the head of babies - and some, like Baptists baptize when people are older - they have to submerge water - often in churches - but also on river banks...

So that is what baptizing is...

Any other specific questions?

Hello Diri Gyan, Gellek sopas Kake Gyan .. therefore the #3 would be like this:

پێنج خوولەک (دەقە) پێش ئێستا من پسکیتێکم خوارد

as you know the bese of this verb is ( خواردن) and in this sentence the verb should be in Past time cause the event was happend 5 mins ago,
therefore the (خواردن) is gonna be Past wich wrote as (خوارد)
خواردن is the Base
خوارد is the Past
دەخۆم in future .. I'll eat the cookie and this letter (م) is refers to ( I am ) it is called Pronouns

independent pronounds i don't know if i said it right in english but this kind of pronouns is caming lonely don't want to be linked to the verbs which they are:

من = I am
ئێمە = Us
تۆ = you
ئێوە = You ( plural)
ئەو = He/she
ئەوان = they

by the way pronounds in kurdish classified into two groups:
first called جێناوە سەربەخۆکان
جێناو = pronouns
سەربەخۆکان = independence which contained:

من، ئێمە، تۆ ، ئێوە، ئەو ، ئەوان

and the other group is called جێناوی لکاوەکان
لکاوەکان = linked to the verbs

م - مان
ت - تان
ی - یان

م = I am
مان = We are
ت = you
تان = you ( plural)
ی = he / she
یان = they

خواردم = I ate
خواردمان = we ate
خواردت = you ate
خواردتان = you (more than one persons) ate
خواردی = he/she ate
خواردیان = they ate
that if the verb was in Past time, if it is not in past time they whole pronouns possition will be replaced... i hope .. i really hope, it you got it and helps you .. grammer ... is so hard .. i don't know .. as I was so bad in Kurdish Grammer in School ..

P.S. - Does anyone know of a website that has a good online English-Kurdish-English dictionary? I can't find a good one anywhere.

Wearing it on the left ear means that you're either married, engaged, or taken and on the right, it means that you're available. Although no-one really adheres to this at all anymore. They simply put in their ears because it looks nice, no meaning though.

any takers for the last couple of sentences?? --> #10,11,15,16,18,21 :)
