Most of kurds use SPAS as THANK YOU, but. . . . .
SPAS is not in kurdish language!!! It is in russian.
May be someone say, it is kurdish word but in russian use it . . . But no! :)
"Spas" doesn't have a word-root in kurdish language. SPAS is from russian word SPASIBO,
it has two word-roots SPASI and BOG.
SPASI=SAVE
BOG=GOD.
SPASIBO=GOD SAVE.
There is "Razîbûn" in kurdish as thankfulness.
Thank You=Razime
Thank You very much=Pir' Razîme

Let God be thankful for You=Xwedê ji Te Razî be.

Don't let this post die...

Perîşan (kurdish)
Perecer (spanish) -In spanish, "Perecer" is pronounced as "pereser"
Perish (english)

Nav (kurdish)
Nom (katalan)
Nombre (spanish)

Derd (kurdish), means "disease" in englsih.
Dard (katalan!!) and Dardo (spanish) means "dart" in englsih. This is an interesting one, because there may not be a word in kurdish for "dart". If so, Can we agree about a new kurdish meaning for "derd" (those darts of the well known game)?

By the way, kurds usually talk on a metaphorichal way: "Derdê dilê min gelekin" --> "My heart has a big disease / I'm so hurt" New Alternative --> "My heart is full of darts"

Somebody help me, cause I'm not a linguist :)

EDIT: A week ago I noticed this of "Spasibo" in a Sokurov Movie (russian movie). I was really intrigued about that. Amazing entries, Nazelia. Please, don't stop it.

Here are some etymologically similar words (of the same root de facto) shared between Kurdish (particularly Kirmanjí branch) and European languages:

Kurdish "kerd" ~ English "herd", Old Norwegian "hyordh", German "Herde", Old Slavic "creda", Greek "korthys" (means "heap"), Lithuanian "kerdzius (means "shepherd")

Kurdish "lísk" ~ English "light", German "Licht", Greek "leukos", Latin "lucere", Old Slavic "luci", Welsh "llug", Old Irish "loche".

Kurdish "hewér" ~ English "air", Latin "aura/aerem", French "air", Greek "aer".

Kurdish "wesht" (south) ~ English "east", German "Ost", Old Norwegian "austr", Greek "aurion" (means "morning"), Lithuanian "auszra" (means "dawn"), Latin "auster" (means exactly the same as Kurdish "wesht" ~ "south"). The last one, Latin "auster", attracts more interest since we get the name of the largest Southern island on the earth "Australia".

Kurdish "enkir" ~ English "angry", Old Norwegian "angra"

Kurdish "lan"/"len" ~ English "land", German "land", Dutch "land", Old Irish "land", Welsh "llan" (means "enclosure").

Kurdish "hoz" (tribe; family; house) ~ English "house", Old English "hus", Dutch "huis", German "Haus". In this case the Germanic words as well as Kurdish "hoz" are still of uncertain Proto Indo-European root.

Kurdish "zirk/zik" (heart/stomach) ~ English "heart", Old Norwegian "hyarta", Dutch "hart", German "herz", Greek "kardia", Old Irish "cride", Welsh "craidd", Lithuanian "shirdis", Old Slavic "sreda".

Kurdish "jhenu" ~ English "knee", Greek "gony", Latin "genu", French "genou".

Kurdish "man/mam" (old man/uncle) ~ English "man", German "Mann"

Kurdish "wér" (brave/freeman) ~ English "hero", Lithuanian "vyras", Latin "vir", Old Irish "fer".

@ Azadkanjo

Regarding to your assumption about English "dart" and Kurdish "derd", although I couldnt find the Proto Indo European root, but I am afraid they arent etymologically alike. You may find a wide range of etymological materials about English words right here: http://www.etymonline.com ; just type the word that you want to hunt up its root then you would get the etymology just like that 8)

Good job and thanks for your posts which are really interesting and potentially useful. :)

But in connection with Kurdish "sipas" I got to affirm that it is of a certain Kurdish origin:

Northern Kurdish (Kurmanjí): sipas

Central Kurdish (Soraní): supas / sipas

Southern Kurdish (Kirmajhí): sipas

Official Persian (not in colloquial speech): sépas

It is an Iranian word and possibly, from a root-finding (etymological) aspect, has nothing to do with Russian "spasibo". Its root is Middle Iranian "spas" ~ "thank, blessing, grace". Also "razí" is an Arabic loan in Kurdish language. The term "razíme" literally means "I am pleased". So that "sipas" is a preferable choice.

In case of root-finding the outward resemblance shared between two words is nothing at all, unless we could confirm that they are of the same root. Consider Kurdish "bed" and English "bad". Both convey exactly the same meaning, but they are no etymological cognates (namely they are not derived from a common root). But on the other hand we got Kurdish "sipindí" ("shepherd dog"), English "hound" ("hunting dog"), both sharing the same Indo-European root. And it might be astonishing if I told you that even Russian "sabaka" ~ "dog" and Armenian "shun" (if I am correct to spell it) share the same Indo-European root too! As you see Kurdish "sipindí", English "hound", Russian "sabaka", and Armenian "shun" don’t look alike very much, but nevertheless they do share the same root; in contrary to Kurdish "bed" and English "bad" that are apparently all alike but originally don’t hold a common root. An example of outwardly similar words sharing the same root could be Kurdish "bra" , Russian "brat", and English "brother"; they all look alike as well as they are derived from a common Indo-European root. This is why I love to immerse myslef into a sea of words, becuz over there you do not know what is coming up next: pretty amusing, arousing curosity, and enlivening :)

armenian has many similarities with Kurdish, more similarities with Kurdish than any other language that I've seen, and Armenian language is pretty isolated? This is something I want to study more, as it's very interesting.
