Thoughts of the day every day in 2013

This is where you can talk about every subject (previously it was called shout room)

WOW it must have been 28c here today :ymapplause:

I spent the entire day working extremely hard on my freckles :ymdevil:

Many of my freckles fade overnight - I keep hoping that if I get enough freckles they will join together and make it look as though I have a suntan - now I look rather similar to a join-the-dots pictures in a children's book :))

28c ideal for me - when it gets to 30c and above very difficult to sleep at night - building does not cool down

E-mail error ends up on road sign

PostAuthor: Anthea » Fri Aug 30, 2013 10:32 pm

When officials asked for the Welsh translation of a road sign, they thought the reply was what they needed.

Image
The English is clear enough to lorry drivers - but the Welsh reads "I am not in the office at the moment. Send any work to be translated."

Unfortunately, the e-mail response to Swansea council said in Welsh: "I am not in the office at the moment. Send any work to be translated".

So that was what went up under the English version which barred lorries from a road near a supermarket.

"When they're proofing signs, they should really use someone who speaks Welsh," said journalist Dylan Iorwerth.

Swansea council got lost in translation when it was looking to halt heavy goods vehicles using a road near an Asda store in the Morriston area.

All official road signs in Wales are bilingual, so the local authority e-mailed its in-house translation service for the Welsh version of: "No entry for heavy goods vehicles. Residential site only".

The reply duly came back and officials set the wheels in motion to create the large sign in both languages.

The notice went up and all seemed well - until Welsh speakers began pointing out the embarrassing error.

Welsh-language magazine Golwg was promptly sent photographs of the offending sign by a number of its readers.

Managing editor Mr Iorwerth said: "We've been running a series of these pictures over the past months.

"They're circulating among Welsh speakers because, unfortunately, it's all too common that things are not just badly translated, but are put together by people who have no idea about the language.

"It's good to see people trying to translate, but they should really ask for expert help.

"Everything these days seems to be written first in English and then translated.

"Ideally, they should be written separately in both languages."

A council spokeswoman said: "Our attention was drawn to the mistranslation of a sign at the junction of Clase Road and Pant-y-Blawd Road.

Other confusing signs

"We took it down as soon as we were made aware of it and a correct sign will be re-instated as soon as possible."

The blunder is not the only time Welsh has been translated incorrectly or put in the wrong place:

• Cyclists between Cardiff and Penarth in 2006 were left confused by a bilingual road sign telling them they had problems with an "inflamed bladder".

• In the same year, a sign for pedestrians in Cardiff reading 'Look Right' in English read 'Look Left' in Welsh.

• In 2006, a shared-faith school in Wrexham removed a sign which translated the Welsh for staff as "wooden stave".

• Football fans at a FA Cup tie between Oldham and Chasetown - two English teams - in 2005 were left scratching their heads after a Welsh-language hoarding was put up along the pitch. It should have gone to a match in Merthyr Tydfil.

• People living near an Aberdeenshire building site in 2006 were mystified when a sign apologising for the inconvenience was written in Welsh as well as English.

I wonder if this sort of mistake has been made on any Kurdish signs :-?

I love chocolate so every day I normally treat myself to 1 or 2 small bars of:

This hot weather I enjoy Cadbury Dairy Milk Caramel Nibbles

Leave them in the freezer and only takes a few out at a time - allow 1 or 2 of them to melt in your mouth absolutely YUMMY

I do not have much else that is sweet in my diet - I take 2 spoonfuls of sugar in my weak black tea - but only drink 2 cups a day

I drink lots of water - so hot here #:-s

When I was young my ideal man looked like this:

Image

His name was John and YES he really did look almost the same as a young Dolph Lundgreen only better looking :-*

And he was an excellent cook :x

I left him to go to university - but we remained friends for a great many years - often he would just turn up unannounced and take me out to dinner :D

I saw him at a meeting last year - he is extremely rich now but never really happy - I put my life into study and helping others - he put his life into property and made millions - I wonder which one of us is happier - he looked sad and told me he never had anyone to cook for :ymhug:

2 September

27c lovely and warm :ymparty:

I am getting used to this heat - I will not be happy if I am snowed in again this winter - the local authorities send out gritting lorries but the only clear major roads and motorways

I have decided that I wish to live somewhere it is about 28c most of the time - I could lay out in the sun and work on my freckles during the day - and work on my puta at night :o)

Get real... you drove away people. The main population of this forum were young kurdish patriots, who you and piling drove away. This is why people don't take this forum seriously anymore and why only you and piling post on it. This forum should be renamed Anthea & Pilings middle-east blog with the motto "Two middle-aged european women commentaries on middle-east". The name of the forum is entirely misleading. It's like when 20th century anglos create the "middle-east oil company" to somehow give themselves off as if they were real middle-easterners and native arbitrators.
