PM Barzani wishes happy holiday

ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani on Tuesday wished a happy holiday to all Muslims in Kurdistan, Iraq, and the world on the Eid al-Adha (Feast of Sacrifice) holiday, according to a statement from the Kurdistan Regional Government

PM Barzani especially congratulated the Peshmergas, the internal security forces, and the families of the martyrs and Anfal victims.

“I hope this festive occasion brings tolerance, blessings, and joy, while fostering further progress for our nation,” Barzani said.

He also hopes that this feast will bring unity, and stability to the Kurdistan Region and the world.

“Wishing you a blessed Eid, and may God protect Kurdistan,” Barzani concluded.

The Feast of Sacrifice marks the end of the annual Islamic pilgrimage, known as the Hajj, to the city of Mecca in Saudi Arabia. The pilgrimage is considered a mandatory duty for all Muslims that are financially and physically able to carry out at least once in their lifetime.

The religious holiday is the second of two Islamic celebrations, the other being Eid al-Fitr, which marks the end of Ramadan.

Kurdistan During Eid

The Kurdistan Region is expecting hundreds of thousands of tourists to visit the Region's tourist spots during the holy Islamic feast, Eid al-adha, this week

The spokesperson for the Tourism Board in the Kurdistan Region predicted as many as 300,000 tourists arriving in the Region during the next few days, according to Kurdistan 24.

The current cabinet of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) is aiming to broaden and diversify its revenue streams by implementing a comprehensive economic strategy, which includes the advancement of the tourism sector.

The government is seeking to leverage Kurdistan's captivating mountain ranges and breathtaking scenery to attract visitors from various locations. By doing so, they aim to bolster the tourism industry as a key component of their overarching efforts to reinforce the Region's economic foundations.

Additionally, the reputation of Kurdistan for its welcoming hospitality and stable environment serves as an encouraging factor in this endeavor.

Qurbani meat to 20K families

ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – The Barzani Charity Foundation is set to distribute free meat from sacrificial animals slaughtered to mark the Eid Al Adha celebration to nearly 20,000 families in the Kurdistan Region, according to an official of the aid group

The meat donations are part of a joint initiative of the BCF and Red Crescent Society of the United Arab Emirates to help the disadvantaged during the Islamic event, known as the Feast of Sacrifice, during which thousands of livestock are sacrificed.

Over 100 cattle and 33 sheep are going to be slaughtered in the Kurdistan Region, where each family is set to receive at least 2kg of the donated meat, Stav Aso, the head of BCF’s Erbil Office, told Kurdistan 24 at one of the capital’s slaughterhouses.

Overall, 20,000 families will benefit from the donations, she said.

The Kurdish aid group is similarly undertaking donations in Western Kurdistan, where 200 sheep will be slaughtered for the same purpose. The meat will be distributed in Afrin, which was severally hit by the Feb. 6 deadly earthquakes, Ms. Aso added.

The BCF was the first international aid organization earlier this year to extend its aid to the area and southeastern Turkey.

Visiting the slaughterhouse, where the BCF workers were supervising the process, Erbil Governor Omed Khoshnaw expressed his gratitude for the charity group’s donations.

The BCF is one of the most active humanitarian NGOs in Kurdistan that often provides a substantial amount of aid to internally displaced persons and refugees in Iraq, the Kurdistan Region, and northern Syria, as well as multiple programs to enrich the lives of displaced children.

The organization was founded in 2005 and, in its own words, “strives to honor the great legacy of Malla Mustafa Barzani, the leader of the Kurdish Liberation Movement and influencer of the contemporary Kurdish nation.”

Millions of Muslims in the Kurdistan Region on early Wednesday began their Eid Al Adha celebrations, which are set to continue until Saturday, July 1.

Beginning on Wednesday, the sacrifice ritual will continue until the last day of Eid, one of the two Islamic feasts that are celebrated annually. The feast also marks the end of the Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca as well.

The Kurdistan Region health officials have issued several health guidelines for the rite amid the rising infections of Crimean-Congo Hemorrhagic fever (CCHF), a tick-borne disease that transmits from sick animals to human beings through direct contact with blood and fluids.

So far, five people have died in the Kurdistan Region due to the deadly disease, against which no known cure or vaccine is available currently.

Slaughtering has to be made at certified facilities, where hygiene protocol is strictly followed, per the health guidelines. Sacrificial livestock must be checked for any disease and their meat are handled with utmost care in a bid to prevent further infections.

Per Islamic rules of sacrificing, sheep, cattle, camels, and goats that are completely healthy and disease-free, are eligible for slaughter.

The sacrifice of livestock symbolizes a Quranic story, in which God commanded Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) to sacrifice his son, Ismail (Ishmael) to test his devotion and submission to God.

Despite attempts by the devil to dissuade the prophet from undertaking the command, Ibrahim was adamant to do so. In return, Angel Gabriel replaced Ismail with a ram at the last moment. The rite for Muslims is a testament to their obedience and faith.

Called Udhiyya in Arabic, Qurbani means sacrifice, and is believed by Muslims that such an act of sacrifice will grow them closer to God.

Low demand for clothing

As Kurds along with the worldwide Muslim community celebrate Eid al-Adha on Wednesday, the shops in Erbil’s downtown bazaar are not hustling and bustling like they previously did, mostly due to a dire financial situation and the scorching heat

Shopkeepers said that the lack of customers is attributed to limited and unstable financial conditions of the public as well as the summer heat.

While supply is high, the demand for purchasing premium clothes is low as people tend to buy the items they afford.

“We have spent a significant amount of money to buy clothing, but we never expected this little demand,” shop owner Waleed Khalid told Rudaw’s Bakhtiyar Qadir.

Karwan Rasul, a customer, said that his limited financial resources made him opt for cheaper clothing.

“I do not have a job, I do not have money on me, therefore I am forced to buy cheaper clothing,” Rasul said.
.
Many Muslims, including Kurds, on Wednesday marked the first day of the Eid al-Adha holiday with early morning prayers and feasts. The holiday lasts for four days.

After the Eid feast, family, friends, and neighbors visit each other's homes. Men, women, and children dress in brand-new outfits specifically bought for the special holiday.

Guests are often met with hot tea and special sweets called kulicha, which is especially made for Eid. Kulicha is a sweetened pastry stuffed or covered with dates or walnuts with sugar and spices such as cinnamon added for flavor.

Adults also give children Jazhnana, a gift of money, and have candy or chocolate available for those who visit their homes with their parents.

In addition to the festivities of coming together to celebrate the first day of Eid, it is also customary for Muslims to visit cemeteries to pay their respects to loved ones they have lost.

Domestic tourists visited Duhok

ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – Khairi Ali Aso, director of the Duhok tourism directorate, on Saturday told Kurdistan 24 that nearly 60,000 tourists from southern and central Iraq had visited tourist attractions in Duhok Province by Friday for the Eid al-Adha (Feast of Sacrifice) holiday. The number is expected to rise to more than 100,000 by July 8

Aso said that the arrival of this large number of tourists has had a profound impact on Duhok Province's market and economy.

He also stated that they have worked to build more hotels and tourist accommodations for tourists, and called on investors to build more tourist accommodations.

Previously, Ibrahim Abdulmajid, spokesperson for the Kurdistan Regional Government's (KRG) General Board of Tourism, told Kurdistan 24 that more than 300,000 tourists are expected to visit the tourist destinations of the Kurdistan Region.

More than six million tourists visited the Kurdistan Region in 2022.

In addition to the holiday season, thousands of domestic tourists from across Iraq visit the northern Kurdistan Region, known for its mountain resorts and relatively cool temperatures, to escape the scorching summer heat in southern Iraq.

The KRG has proposed plans to further boost the tourism sector as an alternative to its overreliance on hydrocarbon revenues. The plan includes an eight-year plan to attract 20 million tourists annually.

The government launched an electronic visa application system earlier this year in a bid to facilitate investment and tourist traffic into the Region.

Thousands of tourists to Halabja

ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – The Kurdistan Regional Government’s (KRG) Ministry of Municipalities and Tourism on Sunday announced that more than 100,000 tourists visited Halabja Province during the Eid al-Adha holiday

Chia Qasim, Director General of Tourism in Halabja, said that the number of tourists to the Halabja province has increased this year, the statement added.

“25,000 tourists are from the Kurdistan Region, while 75,000 are from other Iraqi provinces,” Qasim added, while noting that the number is expected to rise.

Previously, Ibrahim Abdulmajid, spokesperson for the KRG’s General Board of Tourism, told Kurdistan 24 that more than 300,000 total tourists are expected to visit the tourist destinations of the Kurdistan Region during the holiday.

More than six million tourists visited the Kurdistan Region in 2022.

Erbil-Nashville sisterhood

ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Representative to the United States Bayan Sami Abdul Rahman on Friday told Kurdistan 24 that the sisterhood status between Erbil and Nashville is significant, especially in the diplomatic field

“Nashville is very significant, as it is well known as the Music City and is currently one of the three most thriving economic cities in the US,” the KRG Representative said.

Abdul Rahman also noted that the Erbil-Nashville sisterhood is a remarkable achievement for both cities.

She explained that the future relations between Erbil and Nashville will cover many sectors, especially cultural and social sectors.

“The Kurdish diaspora in Nashville has played a major role in that. Kurds are now working in Nashville’s municipalities, schools, and public markets,” she added.

Moreover, she reaffirmed that many projects will be undertaken between Nashville and Erbil.

“These projects require financial support and expert people. We will do our best for these projects.” Abdul Rahman underlined.

On May 23, Nashville Mayor John Cooper met with Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani, in which Cooper hailed the Kurdish diaspora community in the city as having a “positive role” in forging ties between the two sides.

Wheat marketing in Kurdistan

ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani on Friday ordered the formation of a committee to resolve pressing wheat marketing issues of Kurdistan Region farmers

Sarwar Hawari, a representative of the Ministry of Trade and Industry of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), told Kurdistan 24 that the committee consists of four people.

Hawari also assured all farmers that they will be compensated for the 500,000 tons of wheat that the Iraqi government is scheduled to receive.

Earlier today, Kurdish farmers demonstrated in front of the Erbil silo, demanding that the Ministry of Trade and Industry coordinate with the federal government to offer fair pricing for their commodity.

The farmers indicated that the trucks carrying their wheat have been stationed in front of the Erbil silos for several days with the farmers being prevented from handing over their wheat.

On May 27, PM Barzani visited the Zirarati plain in Erbil to speak with the farmers in the area, in which he stressed the KRG's commitment to focus on the agricultural sector and to market their products on regional and global markets.

In Dec. 2022, the PM highlighted the significance of enhancing the Region’s “underdeveloped” agricultural sector to further strengthen its economy and diversify its revenues. He expressed his government's support for both domestic and foreign investors to participate in the development of the sector, which could guarantee the Region's food security.

The PM reasoned that through agriculture, the Kurdish region can play an effective role in both Iraq and the Middle East, in which there are countries whose lands might be infertile.

"The Kurdistan Region could become Iraq's food basket," the PM added.

One day, the main source of the Kurdish economy, the sale of hydrocarbons, might end, the premier said, adding "it has been a mistake" that the agricultural sector had not been developed earlier.

Erbil’s historic citadel

Changes will be made to Erbil Citadel's interior design after the local government dedicated a budget for its further renovation, announced the governor’s office late Friday, adding that restaurants and cafes will be opened to attract tourists

The governor’s office said in a statement that $135,000 has been allocated to “renovate” the citadel which has been occupied for about 6,000 years.

“Work is underway to renovate the main street of the citadel,” read the statement, adding that electricity has been provided to the historic tell through underground electric transmission lines.

“In the near future, restaurants and cafes will be opened so that it becomes an important tourist spot in the heart of Erbil city,” added the office.

The citadel has been added to UNESCO's World Heritage List since 2014.

“Erbil Citadel is a rare surviving example of a formerly fortified settlement which has grown up on the top of an imposing ovoid-shaped tell,” says UNESCO on its website.

People’s access to most parts of the citadel has been limited.

Renovation efforts, funded by UNESCO, began in 2009.

“Most of them [tourists] visiting here take a tour and leave due to lack of restaurants and cafes,” Nihad Latif, Head of the Erbil Citadel Restoration Commission, said in 2019.

Millions of tourists, mostly from Iraqi central and southern provinces, visit the Kurdistan Region annually, with most of them choosing Erbil province.

ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – Chaired by Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani, the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Council of Ministers held its weekly meeting with the participation of Deputy Prime Minister Qubad Talabani, according to a statement from the KRG

At the beginning of the meeting, PM Barzani commemorated the victims of the Sinjar massacre committed by ISIS.

Barzani called on the international community to recognize this massacre as genocide against the Yezidis and stressed the importance of implementing the Sinjar Agreement.

In the first item of the meeting, the Prime Minister briefed the Council about the latest developments in the implementation of the Iraqi budget law and the negotiations between Erbil and Baghdad.

The Premier noted that the Kurdistan Region has fulfilled all of its financial obligations, and there is no excuse for Baghdad to delay the payment of the Kurdistan Region's financial entitlements.

Furthermore, the Council of Ministers calls on the Kurdish parties to be united in defending the constitutional rights of the Kurdish people.

In the final item, the E-Payment project and My Account Initiative were presented to the council by Aziz Ahmad, Deputy Chief of Staff to the Prime Minister.

PM Barzani thanked the implementation team of the project and the Deputy Prime Minister who worked on digitization in the previous cabinet.

He also expressed his gratitude to the KRG Minister of Finance for supporting the My Account Initiative.

Moreover, he emphasized that all ministries must support the process of digitizing services, which is the basis for building a strong financial infrastructure and improving the banking system in the Kurdistan Region.

Barzani instructed all government ministries and institutions to cooperate with the My Account Initiative to accelerate banking system reform.

At the end of the meeting, the Council of Ministers reaffirmed its support for the Kurdistan Region Presidency to set a new date for the sixth session of the Kurdistan Region Parliamentary elections, and it called on all political parties to support this step.

Halabja launches agritourism

Kurdistan’s first agritourism spot was launched in Halabja, with tourists visiting daily, providing a market for local produce

“Today, we came to this place and picked the fresh crops with our own hands,” Ramiar Ali, a resident from Darbandikhan, told Rudaw’s Sazgar Salah on Sunday.

The farm is not the only highlight for tourists as there is also a place to eat and take a rest. However, most visit to take in the beauty of the place.

“The atmosphere is everything, the place is a spectacular tourist destination and everyone should see this place,” Lava Barzan, a local, said.

“It is good to set aside one day a week and change your mood,” she added.

The project owner has worked continuously for around nine years to get the farm to this day, and he is looking forward to improving it.

“Farmers face a lot of barriers and our products do not make enough profit in the market, so our first idea was to sell our crops through this agritourism destination,” Hamid Ismail, the owner of Kurdistan agritourism, told Rudaw’s Sazgar Salah on Sunday.

Despite having fertile soil, Kurdish farmers often struggle with selling their produce. In 2020, farmers trampled their own tomatoes in protest over low prices, and potato farmers dumped their produce in the street, protesting the presence of banned imports that pushed their fruit and vegetables out of the market.

The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) has named agriculture as a sector it wants to develop as part of efforts to diversify the economy away from oil.

A main objective of Prime Minister Masrour Barzani’s cabinet has been to diversify the Region’s economy and take advantage of its fruitful agricultural capabilities to export goods abroad, despite the majority of its agricultural products being imported from neighboring Iran and Turkey.

The Kurdistan Region in December made the first-ever export of its renowned pomegranates to Gulf countries, marking the Region's first non-oil export and a landmark step in efforts to broaden the economy.

Record number of tourists

The Kurdistan Regional Government’s (KRG) tourism board has announced that a record number of 4.5 million tourists have visited resorts across the Region since the start of this year

"From the start of this year up until June 30, over 4.5 million tourists have visited the Kurdistan Region, with the majority coming from various provinces within Iraq," Ibrahim Abdulmajid, the media head of the KRG’s tourism board, told Rudaw on Sunday.

Abdulmajid added that 2023 has seen an unprecedented surge in tourist visits to the Kurdistan Region.

"During the first six months of the previous year, the Kurdistan Region welcomed approximately 3.1 million tourists. However, within the same timeframe this year, the figure has surged significantly to 4.5 million," he noted.

The bulk of holidaymakers visiting the Kurdistan Region for tourism come from the southern and central provinces of Iraq, with the remaining tourists coming from countries outside of Iraq.

"We have consistently endeavored to address past obstacles that impeded tourist arrivals. We've encouraged foreign tourists to explore the Region and not equate the Kurdistan Region with the broader perception of Iraq," he stated.

The Kurdish official highlighted that the improvement in Iraq's political and security situation has encouraged people to spend their holidays in the Kurdistan Region. Checkpoints in the Kurdistan Region have been streamlined to facilitate tourism, and since February, electronic visas have been introduced for foreign tourists, he detailed.

Tourists usually voice concerns about the elevated prices of tourist attractions.

“During tourist seasons, prices typically differ from regular periods, he added.

Based on data from the KRG tourism board, the past year witnessed over six million tourists.

With its relatively moderate temperature in comparison to the rest of the country and its tremendous nature it has, the Kurdistan Region’s tourism has been a booming sector in recent years.

The KRG plans to attract 20 million tourists per year by 2030.
