Assad's national security advisor killed!

On 18 July 2012, he was reported to have been wounded in a bomb attack in Damascus. On July 20, Syrian state television announced that he had died from his injuries.


Major-General Hisham Ikhtiyar (1941-2012) was a Syrian military official, and a national security adviser to president Bashar al-Assad. He was director of the Syrian GID intelligence agency from 2001 to 2005, and had been the director of the Ba'ath Party Regional Command National Security Bureau (NSB). He was regarded as a part of Assad's inner circle.
